אִוֶּלֶת f.
(1) folly (from the root אָוַל). Very frequently in the Proverbs, as, 5:23 12:23 13:16 14:17, 18 Proverbs 14:18, 29 Proverbs 14:29, 15:2, 14 Proverbs 15:14, 21 Proverbs 15:21.
(2) impiety, Psalms 38:6 comp. נְבָלָה, 69:6.
(3) perhaps power, pre-eminence; as from the root אוּל No. 2, 3, Proverbs 14:24, אִוֶּלֶת בְּסִילִים אִוֶּלֶת “the pre-eminence (or great honours) of fools are folly,” i.e. a fountain of foolish actions. The writer appears to have played on the double signification of the word אִוֶּלֶת.
