שֶׁקֶר pl. with suff. שִׁקְרֵיהֶם Jeremiah 23:32, m.
(1) a lie. דִּבְרֵי שֶׁקֶר lying words, Exodus 5:9. עֵד שֶׁקֶר a lying witness, Deuteronomy 19:18. נִשְׁבַּע לַשֶּׁקֶר to be perjured, Levit. 5:24 19:12. נִכָּא בַשֶּׁקֶר to prophesy false things (notreceived from God), Jeremiah 5:31, 20:6 29:9. Absol. and in the manner of an adverb, (thou hast spoken) falsely, (it is) a lie, 2 Kings 9:12; Jeremiah 37:14. Pl. lies, Psalms 101:7. Once for concr. a liar (for אִישׁ שֶׁקֶר), Proverbs 17:4.
(2) whatever deceives, fraud, vanity. Psalms 33:17, שֶׁקֶר הַסּוּס לִתְשׁוּעָה i.e. they are deceived who hope for victory from cavalry. Hence לַשֶּׁקֶר in vain, 1 Samuel 25:21; Jeremiah 3:23 and שֶׁקֶר without cause, undeservedly, Psalms 38:20, 69:5 119:78, 86 Psalms 119:86.
