שָׂחַק i.q. צָחַק (which see. [Compare Ethiop. ሠሐቀ፡ ሥሕቀ፡: and Zab. ܣܚܩ]), but more used in the later Hebrew
(1) to laugh, Ecclesiastes 3:4. Followed by אֶל to smile upon, Job 29:24 followed by עַל to deride, to laugh at any thing, Psalms 52:8; Job 30:1 followed by לְ id., but specially in contempt, to laugh at in contempt, especially, a person threatening to do much, but able to do nothing, Job 5:22, 39:7, 18 Job 39:18, 22 Job 39:22, 41:21 Proverbs 31:25.
(2) i.q. Pi. No. 3, Judges 16:27.
Piel שִׂחַק, fut. יְשַׂחֵק
(1) to joke, to jest (prop. to laugh repeatedly), Jeremiah 15:17.
(2) to play, to sport, e.g. as children, Zechariah 8:5 as marine animals, Psalms 104:26 compare Job 40:20, 29 Job 40:29also used of the play of arms and skirmishes, (Scharmüßel), 2 Samuel 2:14.
(3) to dance to music vocal and instrumental (just as we speak of playing on an instrument), Judges 16:25; 1 Samuel 18:7; 2 Samuel 6:5, 21 2 Samuel 6:21; 1 Chronicles 13:8, 15:29 Jerem. 30:19, קוֹל מְשַׂהֲפִים “the voice of dancers” (and singers). Jeremiah 31:4, בִּמְחוֹל מְשַׂחֲקִים “in the chorus of dancers,” Proverbs 8:30, 31.
Hiphil, to laugh at in scorn, to deride, followed by עַל 2 Chronicles 30:10.
