ἄρτι [ῐ], Adv. just, exactly, of coincidence of Time, just now (not in Hom.):
1. mostly of the present, with pres. tense, Thgn. 998, Pi. P. 4.158, A. Th. 534; opp. πάλαι, with pf., τέθνηκεν ἄ. S. Ant. 1283; βεβᾶσιν ἄ. Id. El. 1386; ἄ. ἥκεις ἢ πάλαι; Pl. Cri. 43a; more fully ἄ. νυνί Ar. Lys. 1008; ἄ... νῦν or νῦν.. ἄ., Pl. Plt. 291a, 291b; later, = νῦν, Theoc. 23.26,.Galatians 1:9, J. 3. in Antiph. 26.7 (s.v.l.) and later also of the future, just now, presently, Luc. So 1, App. Mith. 69, Astramps. Orac. 94.2; condemned by Phryn. 12; also, just at present, πλεύσεις, ἄ. δὲ οὔ Astramps. Orac. 92.7: with imper., Nonn. D. 20.277, etc. (Perh. cogn. with Skt. ṛtám 'ordinance', ṛtás 'correct'.)
ἄρτι, adverb, according to its derivation (from ἈΡΩ to draw close together, to join, Latinarto; (cf. Curtius, § 488)) denoting time closely connected;
1. in Attic "just now, this moment (German gerade,eben), marking something begun or finished even now, just before the time in which we are speaking" (Lobeck ad Phryn., p. 20): Matthew 9:18; 1 Thessalonians 3:6, and perhaps Revelation 12:10.
2. according to later Greek usage universally, now, at this time; opposed to past time: John 9:19, 25; John 13:33; 1 Corinthians 16:7; Galatians 1:9f, opposed to future time: John 13:37; John 16:12, 31; 2 Thessalonians 2:7; opposed to future time subsequent to the return of Christ: 1 Corinthians 13:12; 1 Peter 1:6, 8. of present time most closely limited, at this very time, this moment: Matthew 3:15; Matthew 26:53; John 13:7; Galatians 4:20. ἄχρι τῆς ἄρτι ὥρας, 1 Corinthians 4:11; ἕως ἄρτι, hitherto; until now, up to this time: Matthew 11:12; John 2:10; John 5:17; John 16:24; 1 Corinthians 4:13; 1 Corinthians 8:7; 1 Corinthians 15:6; 1 John 2:9. ἀπ' ἄρτι, see ἀπαρτί above. Cf. Lobeck ad Phryn., p. 18ff; (Rutherford, New Phryn., p. 70f). [SYNONYMS: ἄρτι, ἤδη, νῦν: Roughly speaking, it may be said that ἄρτι just now, even now, properly marks time closely connected with the present; later, strictly present time (see above, and compare in English just now i. e. a moment ago, and just now (emphatic) i. e. at this precise time). νῦν now, marks a definite point (or period) of time, the (object) immediate present. ἤδη now (already) with a suggested reference to some other time or to some expectation, the subjective present (i. e. so regarded by the writer). ἤδη and ἄρτι are associated in 2 Thessalonians 2:7; νῦν, and ἤδη in 1 John 4:3. A.D. 70–80) λ ]έγων ὅτι μετὰ τὸν θερισμὸ [ν ἐργολ ]αβήσομα [ι ], ἄρτι γὰρ ἀσθενῶι, P Lond 937 b.8 ff. (iii/A.D.) (= III. p. 213) δικάζομαι χάριν τῶν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μου καὶ οὐ δύναμαι ἄρτι ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σ [έ ], Syll 387.8 A.D. 127—a rescript of Hadrian) δίκαια ἀξιοῦν μοι δοκεῖτε καὶ ἀναγκαῖα ἄ [ρ ]τι γεινομένῃ πόλει : Stratonicea (in Lydia) was just ";incorporated."; The word is very common in magical formulae, e.g. P Lond 121.373 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 96) ἐν [τ ]ῇ ἄρτι ὥρᾳ ἤδη ἤδη ταχὺ ταχύ, ib. .546 ἐν τῇ σήμερον ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῇ ἄρτι ὥρᾳ, and the incantation in the long Paris papyrus 574.1245 (iii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 114) ἔξελθε, δαῖμον,. . .καὶ ἀπόστηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ δῖ (να) ἄρτι ἄρτι ἤδη, ";depart from so and so at once, at once, now."; For the combination of Matthew 11:12, etc., cf. P Oxy VI. 936.23 (iii/A.D.) οὐκ ἔχω ἄρτι σεῖτον οὐδὲ τὰ βιβλίδια ἀπήρ [τ ]ι ̣σ ̣ται ἕως ἄρτι, ";the petitions have not yet been got ready"; (Edd.). According to Moeris p. 68 : Ἄρτι, οἱ μὲν Ἀττικοὶ τὸ πρὸ ὀλίγου, οἱ δὲ Ἕλληνες καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ νῦν λέγουσι.
