ἀπονέμω; (νέμω to dispense a portion, to distribute), to assign, portion out (ἀπό as in ἀποδίδωμι (which see, cf. ἀπό, V.)): τίνι τί viz. τιμήν, showing honor, 1 Peter 3:7 (so Herodian, 1, 8, 1; τήν τιμήν καί τήν εὐχαριστίαν, Josephus, Antiquities 1, 7, 1; τῷ ἐπισκόπω πᾶσαν ἐντροπήν, Ignatius ad Magnes. 3 [ET]; first found in (Simonides 97 in Anthol. Pal. 7, 253, 2 (vol. i., p. 64, Jacobs edition)); Pindar Isthm. 2, 68; often in Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch, others.).

In P Oxy I. 71ii. 3 (A.D. 303) a Prefect is praised as rendering to all their due—πᾶσι τὰ ἴ [δ ]ια ἀπονέμις : cf. ib. IX. 1185.6 (c. A.D. 200) τ ̣ὰς περὶ τῶν γυμνασιαρχιῶν καὶ ἀγορανομιῶν ἐφέσις τοῖς κρατίστοις ἐπιστρατήγοις ἀπένειμα, the ";assigning"; of appeals to the strategi. See also OGIS 90.19 (Rosetta stone, B.C. 196) τὸ δίκαιον πᾶσιν ἀπένειμεν, ib. 116.19 (ii/B.C.) ἐπ᾽αὐταῖς τὰς ἀξίας ] χάριτας ἀπονέμοντες [ἀεὶ τοῖς εὐεργετήσασιν ], and Syll 325.33 (i/B.C.) βουλόμενος τὰς τῆς εὐσεβε [ί ]ας χάριτας τοῖς θεοῖς ἀπονέμειν, which come near the use in 1 Peter 3:7.
