III intr., also,

1 work with, assist, σφῷν ὅπως ἄριστα συμφέροι θεός S. Ph. 627; πάντα συμφέρουσ' Ἰάσονι E. Med. 13; συμφέροντι (or Συμφέροντι as pr. n.) Ἡρακλεῖ IG 22.2114.

come together, opp. διαφέρεσθαι, Heraclit. 10, cf. Pl. Sph. 242e, etc.; meet, associate with, Theoc. 8.2; of sexual intercourse, Luc. Herm. 34, Tox. 15.

2. in hostile sense, meet in battle, engage, πτόλεμόνδε Il. 8.400; μάχῃ 11.736; τινι with one, A. Th. 636: abs., Th. 7.36; so συνοισόμεθα πτολεμίζειν Hes. Sc. 358; ς. κακῷ encounter it, Hdt. 6.50.

II agree with, οὐδαμοῖσι ἄλλοισι ς. ἀνθρώπων, in custom, Id. 1.173, cf. 2.80, etc.; in statement, ib. 44, al.; περί τινος Id. 4.13; opp. διαφέρεσθαι, Antipho 5.42; live on friendly terms with, τισι Hdt. 4.114, Opp. H. 5.34: abs., agree together, be of one mind, εἰ δὲ μὴ συμφεροίατο if they could not agree, Hdt. 1.196; ἐὰν δὲ ἀνὴρ καὶ γυνὴ μηδαμῇ συμφέρωνται Pl. Lg. 929e; also ξ. γνώμῃ ὥστε ἀπαλλάσσεσθαι τοῦ πολέμου Th. 4.65; καθ' αὑτοὺς ξ. settle their affairs by themselves, Id. 6.13; concur, τῇδε γὰρ ξυνοίσομαι S. OC 641; ἐγὼ δὲ τούτοις κατὰ τοῦτο εἶναι οὐ συμφέρομαι Pl. Prt. 317a.

2. to be in harmony with, εὖ τοῖς πράγμασι ς. Id. Cra. 419d; adapt oneself to, τοῖς παροῦσιν Plu. Tim. 15; ς. τὰ πολλὰ πολλοῖς correspond with, E. Heracl. 919 (lyr.); Χαίτης πῶς συνοίσεται πλόκος; correspond, be like, Id. El. 527; συμφέρεται ὡυτὸς εἶναι Hdt. 2.79; ἔργῳ τοὔνομα συμφέρεται Call. Epigr. 6.6.

III of events, happen, turn out, occur, come to pass, ἔμελλε τοιοῦτό σφι συνοίσεσθαι Hdt. 8.86; οὐδὲν γάρ σφι Χρηστὸν συνεφέρετο Id. 4.157; οὐδέν οἱ μέγα ἀνάρσιον πρῆγμα συνηνείχθη Id. 3.10; ἐπὶ τὸ βέλτιον τὸ πρᾶγμα.. συνοίσεται Ar. 2. impers., συμφέρεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἄμεινον it happens, falls out for the better, Hdt. 7.8. ά; ἄμεινον συνοίσεσθαι Id. 4.15; αὐτῷ συνεφέρετο παλιγκότ ως it turned out ill to him, ib. 156; so συνηνείχθη τοιόνδε γενέσθαι πρῆγμα Id. 1.19, cf. 6.86. ά, Th. 1.23, al.; ς. οἱ τυφλὸν γενέσθαι Hdt. 2.111; v. supr. συμφέρω; 1 aorist participle συνενέγκαντες (Acts 19:19); from (Homer (in middle)), Aeschylus, Herodotus down; to bear or bring together (Latinconfero), i. e.

1. with a reference to the object, to bring together: τί, Acts 19:19.

2. with a reference to the subject, "to bear together or at the same time; to carry with other's; to collect or contribute in order to help, hence, to help, be profitable, be expedient"; συμφέρει, it is expedient, profitable, and in the same sense with a neuter plural: with the subject πάντα, 1 Corinthians 6:12; 1 Corinthians 10:23; τί τίνι, 2 Corinthians 8:10; with an infinitive of the object (as in Greek writings), Matthew 19:10; 2 Corinthians 12:1 (where L T Tr WH have συμφέρον); with the accusative and infinitive John 18:14; συμφέρει τίνι followed by ἵνα (see ἵνα, II. 2c. (Buttmann, § 139, 45; Winer's Grammar, 337 (316))), Matthew 5:29; Matthew 18:6; John 11:50; John 16:7. τό συμφέρον, that which is profitable (Sophocles, Euripides, Xenophon, Demosthenes, others): 1 Corinthians 12:7; plural (Plato, de rep. 1, p. 341 e.), Acts 20:20; advantage, profit, Hebrews 12:10; τό ... σύμφορον τίνος (often in Greek writings) the advantage of one, one's profit, 1 Corinthians 7:35; 1 Corinthians 10:33 (in both passaagaes, L T Tr WH read σύμφορον, which see).

2. Intrans., and mostly impers., συμφέρει , it is expedient, profitable or an advantage: 1 Corinthians 6:12; 1 Corinthians 10:23, 2 Corinthians 8:10; c. inf. (M, Pr., 210), Matthew 19:10, John 18:14; c. dat., seq. ἵνα (Bl., § 69, 5), Matthew 5:29-30; Matthew 18:6, John 11:50; John 16:7. Ptcp., ςυμφέρων , profitable: 1 Corinthians 12:7; pl., Acts 20:20; (οὐ σ . sc. ἐστιν ; = οὐ συμφέρει ; cf. Thuc., iii, 44, 2), 2 Corinthians 12:1; as subst., τὸ σ ., profit, Hebrews 12:10.†

The word is used of oxen drawing wood in V Flor II. 158.7 (iii/A.D.) παράσχες. . τὸ ταυρικὸν ἵνα συρῇ εἰς κω ̣μ [η ]ν τὰ ξύλα, ib. 227.5 (A.D. 257) σύροντι ξύλα ἀπὸ τῆς διώρυγος. For an incorrect perf. part. = ";attached,"; see P Lond V. 1686.33 (A.D. 565) μετὰ τῆς σεσυρομ (ένης) αὐταῖς συντελείας.

The word is read by Rendel Harris in Ev. Petr. 3 σύρωμεν (for εὕρωμεν) τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ, with which Robinson and James (p. 17) compare Acts of Philip (Tisch. p. 143) σύρατε τοὺς μάγους τούτους. The compd. παρασύρω occurs in P Oxy III. 486.15 cited s.v. παρουσία.
