lit. ";strike with a rod,"; verbero, came in late writers to be used in the sense of ";strike (the face) with the palm of the hand"; (Suidas : ῥαπίσαι · πατάσσειν τὴν γνάθον ἁπλῇ τῇ χειρί) : see Lob. Phryn. p. 175, and cf. Rutherford NP p. 257 ff. This suits both the NT occurrences of the verb Matthew 5:39; Matthew 26:67 : cf. LXX Hosea 11:4, 1 Esdras 4:31.
