one who works for his living, day-labourer, poor man, opp. πλούσιος, Democr. 283; opp. δυνάμενος, Archyt. 3; πτωχοῦ μὲν γὰρ βίος.., ζῆν ἐστιν μηδὲν ἔχοντα· τοῦ δὲ πένητος ζῆν φει- δόμενον καὶ τοῖς ἔργοις προσέχοντα Ar. Pl. 553; οἱ π. αὐτῶν Hdt. 1.133, 2.47; πλούσιος ἐκ πένητος Lys. 1.4; πένητες ἄνθρωποι Hdt. 8.51; οἷ' ἀνὴρ π. S. Ph. 584; π. ἵππος X. Oec. 11.5.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

πένης, πένητος, (πένομαι to work for one's living; the Latinpenuria and Greek πεινάω are akin to it (cf. Vanicek, p. 1164); hence, πένης equivalent to ἐκ πόνου καί ἐνεργείας τό ζῆν ἔχων, Etym. Magn.), poor: 2 Corinthians 9:9. (From Sophocles and Herodotus down; the Sept. for אֶבְיון, עָנִי, דַּל, רָשׁ, etc.) [SYNONYMS: πένης, πτωχός: "πένης occurs but once in the N. T., and then in a quotation from the O. T., while πτωχός occurs between thirty and forty times .... The πένης may be so poor that he earns his bread by daily labor; the πτωχός that he only obtains his living by begging." Trench, § xxxvi.; cf. Schmidt, chapter 85, 4; chapter 186.]

With πινακίδιον, ";a writing tablet,"; in Luke 1:63 cf. the form πινάκιον in P Hal I. 1.225 (mid. iii/B.C.) ὁ δὲ καλεσάμενος γραφέτω τὴν μαρτυρίαν εἰς π [ι ]ν [ ]κι [ο ]ν, P Amh II. 126.38 (account—early ii/A.D.) τιμῆ (ς) πινακίο (υ) (δραχμὴ) α ̄ (ὀβολοὶ δύο), and Syll 790 (=.3 1157).41 (c. B.C. 100) ἀποδεχόμενοι τὰ πινάκια παρὰ τῶν μαντευομένων.

Πινακίς, which is a v.l. in Lk l.c., may be illustrated from P Ryl II. 144.19 (A.D. 38) ἀπώλεσα πινακείδα, ";I lost a writing-tablet,"; and P Leid Wiii. 5 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 89) ἔχε δὲ πινακείτα (l. πινακείδα) εἰς ἣ μέλεις τρφιν (l. μέλλεις γράφειν) ὅσα σοι λέγει. See also Gnomon 36 (c. A.D. 150) (= BGU V.
