This verb = ";persuadendo excitare, sollicitare,"; which in the NT is found only in Acts 18:13, is well illustrated by P Magd 14.3f. (B.C. 221) where a father lodges a complaint against a courtesan who had induced his son to sign a bill in her favour for 1000 drachmas—παραστησαμένη γάρ τινας [τῶν παρ᾽ αὐτῆς, ἀνέπεισεν τὸν υἱόν μου. . . συγγράψασθαι αὐτῆι κτλ. So P Oxy X. 1295.10 (ii/iii A.D.). The sense of evil persuasion equally underlies the use in LXX Jeremiah 36:8 [MT Jeremiah 29:8], 2 Maccabees 1:11. In P Ryl II. 114.8 (c. A.D. 280) the nuance is weaker, but survives in the complaining tone of the aggrieved widow who writes Συρίων. . . ἀναπίσας τὸν ἄν [δρα Γανίδα ὀνό ]μ ̣α ̣τι ποιμένιν αὐτοῦ τὰ πρόβατα, ";persuaded my husband G. to pasture his flock"; (Edd.).
