1. wash the hands or feet (v. sub fin.), νίζε δ' ἄρ' ἆσσον ἰοῦσα ἄναχθ' ἑόν Od. 19.392; αὐτὰρ ἐπεὶ νίψεν ib. 505, cf. 358; τῷ σε πόδας νίψω ib. 376, cf. Orac. ap. Hdt. 6.19; ἁ δὲ χεὶρ τὰν χεῖρα νίζει Epich. l.c.: Med., νίψατο δ' αὐτὸς χεῖρας Il. 16.230, cf. Hes. Op. 739; νίψασθαι, abs., to wash one's hands, Od. 1.138, etc.; χεῖρας νίψασθαι ἁλός [with water] from the sea, 2.261 (v. infr. 11); νίψασθαι λίμνης πόδα Hes. Fr. 122; οὔρῳ νιψάμενος τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς Hdt. 2.111.

II wash off, ἐπεί σφιν κῦμα θαλάσσης ἱδρῶ.. νίψεν ἀπὸ χρωτός Il. 10.575; ἀπ' αὐτοῦ δ' αἷμα κελαινὸν νίζ' ὕδατι λιαρῷ 11.830, 846; φόνον ἐμῆς ἔνιψε χειρός E. Sthen. l.c.: Pass., αἷμα νένιπται Il. 24.419: Med., ἐκ ποταμοῦ χρόα νίζετο ἅλμην he washed the brine off his skin [with water] from the river, Od. 6.224. Commonly used of washing part of the person, while λούομαι is used of bathing, πλύνω of washing clothes, etc.; but νίζω is sts. used of things, σπόγγοισι.. τραπέζας νίζον Od. 1.112; [δέπας] ἔνιψ' ὕδατος καλῇσι ῥοῇσι Il. 16.229; ὕδατι νίζειν.. πλίνθον Theoc. 16.62. Att. Prose writers use the word only in compds., v. ἀπο-, ἐναπο-, ἐκ-νίζω. (Cf. OIr. nigid, Skt. nénekti 'wash', niktá - 'washed', Gr. -νιπτό-ποδες, χέρνιβα, I.- E. nig[uglide] -.)

Lob. ad Phryn., p. 241 (Veitch, under the word νίζω; Buttmann, 63 (55); Winer's Grammar, 88 (84))); 1 aorist ἔνιψα; middle, present νιπτομια; 1 aorist ἐνιψάμην; the Sept. for רָחַץ; to wash: τινα, John 13:8; τούς πόδας τίνος, ibid. 5f 8, 12, 14; 1 Timothy 5:10; middle to wash oneself (cf. Buttmann, § 135, 5; Winer's Grammar, § 38, 2b.): John 9:7, 11, 15; τάς χεῖρας, to wash one's (own) hands, Mark 7:3; τούς πόδας, John 13:10 (T omits; WH brackets τούς πόδας); νίψαι τό προσοπον σου, Matthew 6:17; νίπτονται τάς χεῖρας αὐτῶν, Matthew 15:2. to wash oneself: John 9:7; John 9:11; John 9:15; τ . χεῖρας , Matthew 15:2, Mark 7:3; τ . πόδας , John 13:10; τ . πρόσωπον , Matthew 6:17 (in cl. Att.. prose, used only in compounds; cf. ἀπο -νίπτω ).†

P Amh II. 59.5 (B.C. 151 or 140) ἑξήκοντα ὀκτώι, PSI V. 470.4 (A.D. 102–103) ἀρτάβας ὀκτώι, and see Mayser Gr. p. 136. MGr ὀχτώ shows the regular change; cf. χτίζω, δίχτυ, etc. The combination κτ, like πτ, does not occur in MGr vernacular.
