I have no care for, be neglectful of, in Hom. always c. neg. (not in Od.), οὐδ' ὣς Μενελάου ἐφημοσύνης ἀμέλησεν Il. 17.697; οὐκ ἀμέλησε κασιγνήτοιο πεσόντος 8.330; οὐκ ἀμέλησε Πατρόκλοιο πεσόντος he lost not sight of Patroclus [in order to plunder him], 17.9:

1. after Hom., with and without neg., εἰ τούτων ἀμελήσει Hdt. 2.121. γ, cf. Ar. Nu. 989, Th. 3.40, Pl. Lg. 900b, al.; δόξης ἀμελῆσαι D. 18.227; ἀμελήσας ὑμῶν 21.167; (τούτῳ is f.l. for τούτου in Lycurg. 15); οὐκ ἐμοῦ τοῦ νομοθέτου ἀμελήσων ἀλλ' εἰς τὸν Κρόνον αὐτόν Luc. Sat. 10.

2. abs., to be careless, negligent, Hes. Op. 400, freq. in Att., Isoc. 9.78, etc.; τὸ μὴ ἀμελεῖν μάθε A. Eu. 86; πῶς ἐπὶ τοῖς φθιμένοις ἀμελεῖν καλόν; S. El. 237.

3. c. acc. rei, Hdt. 7.163: c. acc. pers. et part., overlook: hence, allow, suffer, παῖδας ἐκτεκνούμενος λάθρᾳ θνῄσκοντας ἀμελεῖ lets them die, E. Ion 439: c. gen., τοῦ ὀργίζεσθαι X. Mem. 2.3.9.

4. c. inf., neglect to do, Hdt. 2.66, Pl. Phd. 98d, Lg. 944d, al.

II Pass., to be slighted, overlooked, E. IA 1094, Th. 1.68; ἐκφεύγει τἀμελούμενον S. OT 111; οὐδ' ἐκεῖνά μοι ἀμελεῖται X. Oec. 12.2; οἱ ἠμελημένοι ἄνθρωποι Th. 2.49.

III pf. part. Pass. in med. sense, careless, Max.Tyr. 8.7, 21.9. Adv. ἠμελημένως carelessly, X. An. 1.7.19. ἀμέλει, v. sub voc.

ἀμελέω, (ῶ; future ἀμελήσω; 1 aorist ἠμέλησα; (from ἀμελής, and this from the alpha privative and μέλω to care for); very common in secular authors; to be careless of, to neglect: τίνος, Hebrews 2:3; Hebrews 8:9; 1 Timothy 4:14; followed by an infinitive, 2 Peter 1:12 R G; without a case, ἀμελήσαντες (not caring for what had just been said (A. V. "they made light of it)), Matthew 22:5.

(B.C. 73) ἐὰν δὲ ἀμελήσῃς ἀναγκασθήσομαι ἐγ ̣ω ̣, [λθεῖ ]ν ̣ αὔριο [ν , P Oxy IV. 742.14 (B.C. 2) μὴ ἀμελήσῃς , P Giss I. 1322 f. ἐὰν ἐξετάσῃς περὶ τῶν ἔργω [ν ], οὐκ ἀμελῶ , al. For the construction with the genitive, see P Fay 1129 (A.D. 99) ἠμέληκας αὐτοῦ , ib. 1253 (ii/A.D.) μὴ ἀμελήσας το [ ] κλήρου τοῦ στρατηγικοῦ , ";do not neglect the ballot for the strategus,"; P Oxy I. 11316 (ii/A.D.) μὴ δόξῃς με ἠμεληκότα τῆς κλειδός , ";do not think that I took no trouble about the key"; (Edd.), P Tebt II. 2898 (A.D. 23) ̣ς ̣ α ̣̓[με ]-λοῦντα τῆ ̣ς εἰσπρά [ξεως , ib. 42110 (iii/A.D.), etc., and even with the dative in the illiterate P Par 18.4 μὴ ἀμελήσις (l. ἀμελήσῃς ) τῷ υἱῷ μου . For the passive may be quoted P Giss I. 41ii. 2f. (time of Hadrian) ὑπὸ τ ̣ ̣ς ̣ μακρᾶς ἀποδημίας τὰ ἡμέτε [ρα ] πα [ντ ]α ̣πασιν ἀμεληθέντα τυγχ [άνει , and P Lond Inv. Nr. 1885 v. 12 (in Archiv vi. p. 102) (A.D. 103) ἵν᾽ οὖν τὰ βιβλία α ̣̓νανκεώτατα ὄντα μὴ ἀμεληθῇ . Ἀμελέω is followed by the infinitive in P Grenf II. 38.4 (B.C. 81) μὴ ἀμελήσ [α ]ς α [. . ἀγο ]ράσαι . For the substantive, see P Oxy I. 629 (iii/A.D.) ἐκ τῆς σῆς ἀμελείας , ";through any neglect of yours"; ; and for the adj. a letter from Hermopolis Inv. Nr. 74 (quoted P Giss I. 1323 note) Επαφρόδειτος ἕως τούτου οὐδὲν ἀμελέστ ̣ερον ποιεῖ , ἀλλὰ προσκαρτερεῖ ἡμῖν καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς πράγμασί σου .
