I not drunken, without drunkenness, Plu. 2.464c: Comp., Gp. 7.34.2.

II not intoxicating, perh. so used in Nonn. D. 19.133: as Subst., ἀμέθυστον, τό, remedy against drunkenness, Archig. ap. Gal. 12.572, Dsc. Eup. 1.24; also ἀμέθυστος, ἡ, Plu. 2.15b, Ath. 1.34c:

1. hence, such things as were supposed to act as remedies, viz., 1 kind of herb, Plu. 2.647b; = σέλινον ἄγριον, Ps.- Dsc. 2.175.

2. amethyst, LXX Exodus 28:19, Revelation 21:20, D.P. 1122, AP 5.204, 9.748 (Pl. Jun.): also ἀμέθυστον, τό, IG 11(2).287 B 22 (Delos, iii B.C.).

3. ἀμέθυστον, τό, kind of grape, Colum.3.2.24.

ἀμέθυστος, , , amethyst, a precious stone of a violet and purple color (Exodus 28:19; according to Phavorinus so called διά τό ἀπείργειν τῆς μέθης (so Plutarch, quaest. conviv. iii. 1, 3, 6)): Revelation 21:20. (Cf. B. D. under the word.)
