1. intr., sound, ring, peal, ἠχεῖ δὲ κάρη.. Ὀλύμπου Hes. Th. 42; ὅταν ἀχήσῃ πολιὸς βυθός Mosch. Fr. 1.4; ἀχοῦσι προσπόλων χέρες E. Supp. 72 (lyr.); of metal, ἠχέεσκε ὁ χαλκὸς τῆς ἀσπίδος Hdt. 4.200; τὰ χαλκία πληγέντα μακρὸν ἠχεῖ Pl. Prt. 329a, cf. Men. 66.4; of the grasshopper, chirp, Alc. 39, Theoc. 16.96; of the ears, tingle, ἠχήσει τὰ ὦτα LXX 1 Kings 3:11; διὰ τί ἠχεῖ ἢ διὰ τί ἐμφαίνεται; impers., of anecho, Arist. AP 0.98a27.
