[in LXX: Da LXX Daniel 11:10; Daniel 11:25 (H1624 hithp.), 1 Maccabees 15:40, 2 Maccabees 14:17, etc.;]

1. to stir up, provoke (as in cl.): Colossians 3:21.

2. In good sense (cf. ἐρεθισμός , excitement, in MGr.), to stir up, stimulate: 2 Corinthians 9:2.†

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The subst. is used physically in Syll 891.12 (ii/A.D.) τοῦτόν τε θεὸς πατάξαι ἀπορίᾳ καὶ πυρετῷ καὶ ῥίγει καὶ ἐρεθισμῷ καὶ ἀνεμοφθορίᾳ κτλ.—a passage borrowed apparently from Deuteronomy 28:22. The verb is cognate with ὄρνυμι and orior : cf. the Epic ὀροθύνω (Boisacq Dict. Etym. p. 273 f.). It is used (in malam partem) in Epict. Enchir. 20.
