1. leave behind, ἐπὶ δὲ πλεῖον ἐλέλειπτο Od. 8.475, cf. X. An. 1.8.18 codd.: Med., leave behind, of gleanings, v.l. in LXX Obadiah 1:5 : Pass., c.gen., fall short of, παντὸς ἀριθμοῦ Pl. Epin. 978b: c. dat., τῇ δυνάμει, τῇ οὐσίᾳ, Arist. Ath. 20.2, 27.4.

2.. leave untouched, ὡς οὔτ' ἂν τῶν ἐμῶν ἐπιλίποιμι οὐδὲν οὔτε τῶν φίλων Pl. Prt. 310e: c. part., μυρία ἐ. λέγων Id. Phlb. 26b, cf. 52d.

1. of things, fail one, c.acc. pers., ἥβην.., ἥ μ' ἐπιλείπει Thgn. 1131; ὕδωρ [μιν] ἐπέλιπε Hdt. 7.21, cf. 2.174; so τῶν ὄμβρων ἐπιλιπόντων αὐτούς (sc. τοὺς ποταμούς) Id. 2.25; γλαῦκες ὑμᾶς οὔποτ' ἐπιλείψουσι Ar. Av. 1106; ἐπειδὰν αὐτοὺς ἐπιλίπωσιν ἐλπίδες Th. 5.103: c. inf., [ὁ νόμος] ἐμοὶ μόνῳ ἐπέλιπε μὴ ὠφελῆσαι Antipho 5.17; ἐπιλίποι ἂν ἡμᾶς ὁ χρόνος time would fail me, Isoc. 1.11, cf. Lys. 12.1, Hebrews 11:32; τὸ ὕδωρ ἡμᾶς ἐ. Isoc. 15.320; ἐπιλείψει με λέγονθ' ἡ ἡμέρα D. 18.296: later, c.dat., Plu. Cic. 42, Ael. NA 8.17.

2.. Hdt., freq. of rivers, ἐ. τὸ ῥέεθρον leave their stream unfilled, run dry, Hdt. 7.43, 58, al.; without ῥέεθρον, fail, run dry, ib. 127; τὰς κρήνας καὶ τὰ φρέατ' ἐπιλείπειν πέφυκεν D. 14.30.

3.. generally, fail, be wanting, ἵνα μὴ ἐπιλίπῃ κατεσθιόμενα Hdt. 3.108; σῖτος ἐπιλιπών a deficiency of it, Th. 3.20 codd.; τὰ ἐπιτήδεια ἐ. X. An. 4.7.1; ὥστε τὸν λόγον μηδέποτε ἐ. Pl. Prt. 334e; opp. περιγίγνεσθαι, Ar. Pl. 554: c.gen., fall short, σπουδῆς οὐθὲν ἐ. Michel 332.9 (Odessus).

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐπιλείπω: future ἐπιλειψω; to fail, not to suffice for (any purpose, for the attainment of an end): τινα χρόνος, time fails one, Hebrews 11:32 and many like examples in Greek writings from Demosthenes down; see Bleek, Brief an d. Hebrews 2:2, p. 818.

STRONGS NT 1952a: ἐπιλείχω ἐπιλείχω: imperfect ἐπέλειχον; to lick the surface of, lick over ((cf. ἐπί, D. 1); German belecken): with the accusative of a thing, Luke 16:21 L T Tr WH; (in Long. past. 1, 24 (11) a variant for ἐπιτρέχω).

Michel 332.9 (ii/B.C.) σπουδῆς οὐθὲν ἐπιλείπων ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἀξιουμένοις. On the verb c. acc., as in Hebrews 11:32, see Schmidt de Flavii Josephi elocutione, p. 385, and on the literary character of the phrase in Heb l.c. Wendland Urchristlichen Literaturformen, p. 307 n.4. Ἐπιλείπομαι = ";fail,"; ";come short in,"; is found with the dat. in the recently recovered Constitution of Athens (ed.
