1. to be leader of, c. gen. pers., τῶν δ' ἐξηγείσθω Il. 2.806 (for And. 1.116, v. 11.3).

2. c. acc. pers., lead, govern, in Th., τὰς πόλεις 1.76; τὴν Πελοπόννησον ib. 71. abs., Hdt. 1.151, 9.11.

3. c. dat. pers. et acc. rei, show one the way to, τοῖσι ἐχθροῖσι τῆς πατρίδος ἅλωσιν Hdt. 6.135; ἃ δ' ἐξηγεῖσθε τοῖς ξυμμάχοις Th. 3.55: c. dat. pers. only, go before, lead, ἡμῖν S. OC 1589, etc.: c. acc. loci only, lead the way to, χῶρον ib. 1520.

3. expound, interpret, ἐ. τὸ οὔνομα καὶ τὴν θυσίην Hdt. 2.49; τὸν ποιητήν Pl. Cra. 407a; ἃ Ὅμηρος λέγει Id. Ion 531a; ὁ τὸν Ἡράκλειτον.. ἐξηγούμενος Antiph. 113.3; τὰ νόμιμα D. 47.69: abs., ἄγραφοι νόμοι καθ' οὓς Εὐμολπίδαι ἐξηγοῦνται according to which they expound things, Lys. 6.10, cf. Pr. 216, 702, Th. 5.26; set forth, explain, τὴν ἔλασιν the line of march, Hdt. 3.4, 7.6; ἃ μετὰ χεῖρας ἔχοι καὶ -ήσασθαι οἷός τε Th. 1.138; τὰ τοῦ νομοθέτου βουλήματα Pl. Lg. 802c, cf. ἐξηγέομαι, ἐξηγοῦμαι; imperfect ἐξηγουμην; 1 aorist ἐξηγησαμην;

1. properly, to lead out, be leader, go before (Homer, et al.).

2. metaphorically, (cf. German ausführen) to draw out in narrative, unfold in teaching;

a. to recount, rehearse: (with the accusative of the thing and the dative of person, Acts 10:8); with the accusative of thing, Luke 24:35; Acts 21:19; without an accusative, followed by relative pronoun or adverb, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, Acts 15:12; καθώς, 14 (so in Greek writings from Herodotus down; the Sept. for סִפֵר, Judges 7:13, etc.).

b. to unfold, declare: John 1:18 (namely, the things relating to God; also used in Greek writings of the interpretation of things sacred and divine, oracles, dreams, etc.; cf. Meyer at the passage; Alberti, Observationes etc., p. 207f).
