I neighbour, borderer, γείτονες ἠδὲ ἔται Μενελάου Od. 4.16, cf. 9.48, Hes. Op. 346, etc.; opp. σύνοικος, Pl. Lg. 696b; γ. τινός E. IT 1451, X. An. 3.2.4; τινί ib. 2.3.18; ἐκ τῶν γ. or ἐκ γειτόνων from or in the neighbourhood, Ar. Pl. 435, etc.; οἷον ἐκ γ. φωνὴν θηρευόμενοι Pl. R. 531a; λύχνον ἐκ τῶν γ. ἐνάψασθαι Lys. 1.14; ἐκ γ. τῆς πατρίδος μετοικεῖν Lycurg. 21, cf. Str. 10.4.12; rarely ἀπὸ γ. D.S. 13.84; ἐν γειτόνων (sc. οἴκοις) οἰκεῖν Men. Pk. 27, Luc. BGU III. 830.21 (i/A.D.) ἐπὶ γὰρ καὶ γείτων αὐτοῦ εἰ [μ ]ί , P Oxy X. 1272.14 (A.D. 144) ὑπόνοιαν οὖν κατὰ [τ ]ῶν γειτόνων μου , ";having some suspicion against my neighbours"; (Edd.). The adj. is very common in descriptions of locality, e. g. P Par 5 i. 8 (B.C. 114) τὸν εἰς Τάγην οἶκον . . . οὗ γείτονες · νότου οἰκία Ἁρπαήσιος , βορρᾶ ψιλοὶ τόποι κτλ ., P Oxy I. 99.7 (A.D. 55) γείτονες τῆς ὅλη [ς οἰκίας , νότου ] καὶ ἀπηλιώτο [υ ] δημόσιαι ῥῦμαι , X. 1276.8 (A.D. 249) τῆς δὲ ὅλης γείτονες νότου ῥύμη τυφλή , ";the adjacent areas of the whole are on the south a blind street"; (Edd.). Γειτνία and γειτνιάω are used in a similar way—P Tebt I. 14.10 (B.C. 114) γειτνίας , ";adjoining areas,"; ib. 105.19 (B.C. 103) πλὴν τῆς γειτνιώσης τῆι Θοῶνιος , ";except that which adjoins the land of Thoönis,"; P Saï d Khan 2a. .8 (B.C. 22) ὅρια καὶ γειτνίαι ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνατολῶν κτλ . This noun may = ";neighbourhood,"; as in P Flor III. 319.5 (A.D. 132–7) ο ̣ἱ ἐν γιτνίᾳ μου ὄντες . See also Syll 929.38 (ii/B.C.) for a verb γειτονέω . In MGr γείτονας = ";neighbour.";
