שָׁכֵן fut. יִשְׁכֹּן.
(1) to let oneself down, to settle down, e.g. the pillar of fire and cloud, Numbers 9:17, 22 10:12 Exodus 24:16.
(2) to lie down, especially to take rest, used of the lion, Deuteronomy 33:20 of a nation lying in tents, encamped, Numbers 24:2 of clouds overshadowing any day, followed by עַל Job 3:5. Hence to rest, Judges 5:17; Proverbs 7:11, בְּבֵיתָהּ לֹא יִשְׁכְּנוּ רַגְלֶיהָ “her feet rest not in her house.”
(3) to dwell, to abide (Arab. سكن id.), followed by בְּ of place, Genesis 9:27, 14:13 26:2 Judges 8:11 followed by an acc. of place, Isaiah 33:16; Psalms 68:7. Of frequent occurrence is the phrase שָׁכַן אֶרֶץ to dwell in, or inhabit the land, to possess it quietly, Proverbs 2:21, 10:30 Psalms 37:29 and without אֶרֶץ Ps. 102:29 (compare a similar ellipsis, Isaiah 57:15, “God, שֹׁכֵן עַד who inhabits (the heavens) for ever”); 2 Samuel 7:10, וְשָׁכַן תַּחְתָּיו “and (the people) shall inhabit in their own place;” Deuteronomy 33:16, שֹׁכְנִי סְנֶה “the dweller in the bush,” i.e. Jehovah, compare Exodus 3:2. With a dative pleon. Psalms 120:6, שָֽׁכְנָה לָהּ “to dwell for oneself.”-Part. pass. שָׁכוּן act. dwelling, like the French logé, Judges 8:11.-Once metaph. to dwell in any thing is used for to be familiar with it (see סָכַן and Arab. سكن to be familiar), Proverbs 8:12, “I, wisdom, עָרְמָה שָׁכַנְתִּי dwell in prudence,” am altogether acquainted with her.
(4) pass. to be inhabited, as a place, i.q. יָשַׁב No. 4, Jeremiah 50:39, 33:16 46:26 Isaiah 13:20 used of a tent which is pitched, Joshua 22:19.
Piel, to cause to dwell, Jeremiah 7:7; Numbers 14:30. Jehovah is sometimes said שִׁכֵּן שְׁמוֹ i.e. to fix his abode any where [cause his name to dwell], Deuteronomy 12:11, 14:23 16:6, 11 Deuteronomy 16:11, 26:2, i.q. שׂוּם שְׁמוֹ under שׂוּם No. 1, f. Hence may be explained Psalms 78:60, אֹהֶל שִׁכֵּוֹ בָּאָדָם “the tent (in which) he caused (his name) to dwell amongst men,” unless it be preferred “the tent which he placed amongst men,” compare Joshua 18:1, 22:19. Also from this phrase is taken the Talmudic שְׁכִינָה “presence of God.”
Hiphil, to cause any one to dwell, Genesis 3:24; Job 11:14 to place a tent, Joshua 18:1 (compare Kal, Joshua 22:19); Psalms 7:6, כְּבוֹדִי לֶעָפָר יַשְׁכֵּן “let him make me (my honour) to dwell in the dust,” prostrate me on the dust.
