In the language of Scripture, this is frequently made use of to denote the state of the soul before God. Thus the Lord commanded Abraham: "I am the Almighty God, walk before me, and be thou perfect." (Genesis 17:1) Where it is blessed to observe that the Lord in the precept gives the ability to perform, and gives his glorious name as the security for Abraham's doing it. He that is God Almighty (the El Shaddai), wills the patriarch into the perfection he is to walk in. We have a similar passage. (John 15:4) On the contrary, to walk in darkness, implies the state of darkness of the mind. (1 John 1:4; 1Jn 1:7)
