Many of the numerous inscriptions in the catacombs are characterized by the belief in the doctrines of purgatory, communion of the saints, and the resurrection of the dead. On the tombs of the martyrs we find such expressions as "Pray for us, because we know that thou art in Christ"; "Atticus, thy spirit is in bliss, pray for thy parents"; "May thy spirit, Victoria, be refreshed in the good God"; and "Eternal light shine upon thee, Timothea, in Christ." The word "bury" is unknown; the dead are "deposited in peace" signifying that they are left but for a time till awakened again at the last day.
