In Psalm 58:5; Jeremiah 8:17 the allusion is to those who can charm serpents, probably by soft and gentle sounds. In Deuteronomy 18:11; Isaiah 19:3 it is associated with idolatry and sorcerers: these also carry on their incantations with low mutterings. See DIVINATION.
