Verse 1

not see. Compare Exodus 23:4 , Exodus 23:5 .

Verse 4

Verse 5

that which: i.e. any article of ornament or apparel.

man = geber . See App-14 .

woman's garment. Generally red, and eschewed by men.

the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 .

Verse 6

young. A special various reading called Sevir ( App-34 ) reads "their laying nest": i.e. before all the eggs are laid.

Verse 8

battlement: i.e. a low wall about three feet high running round the flat roof.

Verse 9

divers = two kinds. Compare Leviticus 19:19 .

Verse 10

ox and an ass. One clean, the other unclean; one tall, the other short, therefore cruel under the same yoke.

Verse 11

woollen and linen. One animal, the other vegetable. Linen used of Divine righteousness (Revelation 19:8 ), and not to be mixed with animal or fleshly labour.

Verse 12

fringes = twisted cords. In Matthew 23:5 the Greek is craspeda, because hanging like locks of hair. Not the same as Numbers 15:38 , which was ordained to distinguish Israel from the nations.

quarters. Hebrew "wings".

Verse 15

virginity. The Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 . explained by these words, "the tokens of".

Verse 17

against her. These words are not in Hebrew text, but are contained in some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Syriac and Vulgate.

Verse 19

amerce him = fine him. Old English.

Verse 21

door = entrance.

put evil away. See note on Deuteronomy 13:5 .

Verse 23

betrothed. This, taken with "wife" (Deuteronomy 22:24 ) ex plains Matthew 1:19 , Matthew 1:20 .

Verse 24

wife. See note on Deuteronomy 22:23 , above.

Verse 26

as = according as.

him = his soul. Hebrew. nephesh ( App-13 ).

Verse 30

skirt. Put by Figure of speech Euphemy ( App-6 ), for nakedness. Compare Leviticus 18:7 , Leviticus 18:8 ; Leviticus 20:11 .
