Verse 1
Then all Israel. Compare 2 Samuel 5:2 . Omitting all events in Hebron (2 Samuel 2:1-4 ). See App-56 . In this chapter we have 1-3 David's Coronation; 4-9, David's Capital; 10-47, David's Captains.

by Samuel. Hebrew by the hand of Samuel: "hand" being put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for what is done or written by it.

went to Jerusalem. This is the first event recorded in Chronicles. See note on 2 Samuel 5:6-10 .
inhabitants. The descendants of the Nephilim . App-23 and App-25 .

the mighty men. Hebrew. gibbor. App-14 . Introduced here, at beginning of reign, instead of end of it (2 Samuel 23:8-39 ). Both positions full of instruction: Samuel, chronological ; Chronicles, moral (according to the word of the LORD). See App-56 .

Verse 12
Dodo. Septuagint reads "Dodai". Compare 1 Chronicles 27:4 .

Verse 13
He was with David. Eleazar. In 2Sa 23:11 , 2 Samuel 23:12 , Shammah also was with him. Note the plural verbs in next verse, "theyset. and [they] delivered it and [they] slew". This account is supplementary, not contradictory.
Pas-dammim. Probably Ephes-dammim, between Shocoh and Azekah (1 Samuel 17:1 ).
barley. In 2 Samuel 23:11 , "lentiles". Therefore the field contained both: and the accounts are complementary, not contradictory.
Verse 14
they: i.e. David and Eleazar. See note on 1 Chronicles 11:13 .
saved them by a great deliverance. Septuagint and Syriac read "wrought a great victory". Compare 2 Samuel 23:10 , 2 Samuel 23:12 .
Verse 15
thirty. See note on 1 Chronicles 27:1 .
Rephaim. Hebrew. Rapha. One of the great among the Nephilim, like Anak; giving his name to this valley. Compare Joshua 15:8 . 2 Samuel 5:18 , 2Sa 5:22 ; 2 Samuel 23:13 .Isaiah 17:5 . See note on Numbers 13:22 , Numbers 13:28 . Deuteronomy 1:28 , and App-23 .

Joel the brother of Nathan. Not to be confused with Igal the son of Nathan. The lists are supplementary and independent, Chronicles being of later date, and adding several names after Uriah (1 Chronicles 11:41 ).
Verse 47
the Mesobaite. Septuagint and Vulgate read "of (or from) Zobah".
