Arakian, maka pada hari itu keluarlah Haman dengan sukacita dan kesenangan hatinya, tetapi demi terlihatlah Haman akan Mordekhai dalam pintu istana baginda dengan tiada mau bangkit berdiri atau bergerak sekalipun akan memberi hormat kepadanya, lalu bernyala-nyala amarah Haman akan Mordekhai dengan sepenuh-penuhnya.

⁹ Then went Haman foorth the same day ioyfull and mery in his minde: But when the same Haman sawe Mardocheus in the kinges gate, that he stoode not vp nor moued for him, he was ful of indignation at Mardocheus. ¹⁰ Neuerthelesse, Haman refrained him selfe, and when he came home he sent and called for his friendes and Zares his wyfe. ¹¹ And Haman tolde them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the thinges wherein the king had promoted him so greatly, and how that he had set him aboue the princes and seruauntes of the king. ¹² Haman saide moreouer: Yea, Esther the queene did let no man come in with the king vnto the bancket that she had prepared, except me: and to morowe am I bidden vnto her also with the king. ¹³ But in all this am I not satisfied, as long as I see Mardocheus the Iewe sitting at the kinges gate. ¹⁴ Then saide Zares his wyfe and all his friendes vnto him: Let them make a galous of fiftie cubites hie, and to morowe speake thou vnto the king that Mardocheus may be hanged thereon: then go thou in meryly with the king vnto the banket. And Haman was well content withall, and caused the galous to be made.

Then went Haman forth that day, joyful, and with a glad heart,.... From court to his own house

but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him; did not show him the least degree even of civil respect; which he refused to do, partly lest it should be interpreted an adoration of him, and partly because it was well known to him he had formed a scheme for the destruction of him and all his people; and the rather he refused it to him, as Esther was about to make intercession with the king to revoke his decree, of the success of which he had no doubt; and therefore had nothing to fear from him, but treated him with the utmost contempt, as he deserved:

he was full of wrath against Mordecai; it was a sad mortification to him, and a great allay of that joy and elation of mind on account of the favour he was in; not with the king only, but the queen also, as he imagined.

He stood not up, nor moved for him - This was undoubtedly a serious breach of Persian etiquette, and may well have angered Haman.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Esther 5:9. That he stood not up, nor moved for him — This was certainly carrying his integrity or inflexibility to the highest pitch. But still we are left to conjecture that some reverence was required, which Mordecai could not conscientiously pay.
