Shephatiah
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
SHEPHATIAH (‘Jah has judged’). 1 . One of David’s sons ( 2 Samuel 3:4 = 1 Chronicles 3:3 ). 2 . A family which returned with Zerub. ( Ezra 2:4 = Nehemiah 7:9 ) and Ezra ( Ezra 8:8 ). The name appears in 1E Esther 5:9 as Saphat and in 1Es 8:34 as Saphatias. 3 . A family of the ‘sons’ of Solomon’s servants ( Ezra 2:57 = Nehemiah 7:59 ) = 1Es 5:33 Saphuthi. 4 . A Judahite family ( Nehemiah 11:4 ). 5 . A Benjamite family ( 1 Chronicles 9:8 ). Either this or the preceding should perhaps be identified with No. 2 above. 6 . A contemporary of Jeremiah ( Jeremiah 38:1 ). 7 . A Benjamite warrior who joined David at Ziklag ( 1 Chronicles 12:5 ). 8 . A Simeonite prince ( 1 Chronicles 27:16 ). 9 . A son of Jehoshaphat ( 2 Chronicles 21:2 ).
