Contextual Overview

44 And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun. 45 And Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and said to them, Set your heart on all the words which I have testified against you today, that you command your sons to take heed to do all the Words of this Law. 47 For it is not a useless Word for you, for it is your life, and by this Word you shall prolong your days in the land where you are crossing over the Jordan, there to possess it. 48 And Jehovah spoke to Moses in that same day, saying, 49 Go up into this Mount Abarim, to Mount Nebo in the land of Moab, which is opposite Jericho; and see the land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession; 50 and die in the mountain where you are going, and be gathered to your people, even as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor, and was gathered to his people; 51 because you transgressed toward Me among the sons of Israel at the Waters of Strife in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you did not sanctify Me in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 Yet you shall see the land across from you , but you shall not go in there to the land which I am giving to the sons of Israel.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For it [is] not a vain thing for you,.... That is, the law is not, and the observance of it in them and their children; it was no light and trifling matter, but of great importance and consequence, obedience to it being attended with rewards, and disobedience with punishment:

because it [is] your life: if obeyed, the means of a comfortable and happy life, in the enjoyment of all good things, of the preservation and continuance of it to a length of time; and long life was always reckoned a great temporal mercy:

and through this thing ye shall prolong [your] days in the land whither you go over Jordan to possess it; that is, through their obedience to the law they should live long in the land of Canaan, which they were just going to possess; which explains what is meant by its being their life; their comfortable living and continuance in the land depended on their obedience to the law; see Isaiah 1:19.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

These verses were, no doubt, added by the author of the supplement to Deuteronomy. For the statements contained in them, consult the marginal references.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Deuteronomy 32:47. Through this thing ye shall prolong your days — Instead of being cut off, as God here threatens, ye shall be preserved and rendered prosperous in the land which, when they passed over Jordan, they should possess.
