Contextual Overview

1 The worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying: 2 Thou sonne of man, there were two women the daughters of one mother. 3 And they committed fornication in Egypt, they played the harlottes in their youth: there were their breastes pressed, and there they bruised the teates of their virginitie. 4 The names of them [were] Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister, and they were mine, and they bare sonnes and daughters: thus [were] their names, Samaria is Aholah, and Hierusalem Aholibah. 5 Aholah played ye harlot when she was mine, and she was set on fire with her louers the Assyrians her neighbours: 6 Which were clothed with blewe silke, [both] captaynes and princes, they were all pleasaunt young men, and horsemen rydyng vpon horses. 7 Thus she committed her whordome with them [beyng] all chosen men of Asshur, & with all on whom she doted, and defiled her selfe with all their idols. 8 Neither left she the fornication that she vsed with the Egyptians: for in her youth they lay with her, they bruised the brestes of her maydenhead, and powred their whordome vpon her. 9 Wherfore I deliuered her into the handes of her louers [euen] into ye handes of the Assyrians vpon whom she doted. 10 These discouered her shame, toke her sonnes & daughters, and slue her with the sworde, an euyll name had she among women: for they had executed iudgement vpon her.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Which were clothed with blue,.... A colour the Assyrians were fond of, and clothed their soldiers in, and was taking to the eye; and is mentioned, because that men, finely clothed find beautifully arrayed, are more engaging to women, who are fond of dress:

captains and rulers; men of power and authority in military and civil affairs, either in the camp, or in the court; officers either in the army, or in the king's palace; and which was a recommendation of them:

desirable young men; for their youth, strength, beauty, and honourable employments and offices:

horsemen riding upon horses: of which there was a scarcity in Judea; wherefore such were the more desirable to them, as appearing more grand, and being more serviceable and helpful to them.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The army of the Assyrians is described. War-horses formed an important part in the armies of Assyria and Egypt; Israel was deficient in this respect Isaiah 36:8.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Ezekiel 23:6. Clothed with blue — The purple dye was highly valued among the ancients, and at first was only used by kings, at last it was used among the military, particularly by officers of high rank in the country.
