1 And David got together all the fighting-men of Israel to the number of thirty thousand; 2 And David, and all the people who were with him, went to Baal of Judah to get the ark of God, over which the holy name is named, the name of the Lord of armies, whose place is between the winged ones. 3 And they put the ark of God on a new cart and took it out of the house of Abinadab which was on the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were the drivers of the cart. 4 And Uzzah went by the side of the ark, while Ahio went before it. 5 And David and all the men of Israel made melody before the Lord with all their power, with songs and with corded instruments and instruments of brass.

David: 1 Samuel 10:5, 1 Samuel 16:16, 2 Kings 3:15, 1 Chronicles 13:8, 1 Chronicles 15:10-24, Psalms 47:5, Psalms 68:25-27, Psalms 150:3-5, Daniel 3:5, Daniel 3:7, Daniel 3:10, Daniel 3:15, Amos 5:23, Amos 6:5

on all manner: This place should doubtless be corrected from the parallel place, 1 Chronicles 13:8; where, instead of bechol âtzey beroshim, which is literally, "with all trees or wood of fir," we read bechol ôz oovesheerim, "with all their might, and with songs." This makes a good sense, while the former makes none: the LXX have the same reading here, ום יףקץי, ךבי ום שהביע.

Reciprocal: Exodus 15:20 - all the 2 Samuel 6:21 - play 1 Kings 5:8 - timber of fir 2 Chronicles 20:28 - with psalteries Psalms 33:2 - Praise Psalms 43:4 - upon Revelation 14:2 - harpers

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord,.... That is, before the ark, which was a symbol of the presence of the Lord:

on all manner of [instruments made of] fir wood: which is a general expression, the particulars follow; though instruments of different sorts are mentioned, and even some of metal, as cymbals, which were vessels of brass, they struck one against another, and gave a very acute sound, being hollow g;

even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals; harps, psalteries, and timbrels, are frequently met with; cornets, according to Kimchi, are such sort of instruments, that in playing upon them it required an agitation of the whole body. Now it was that David penned the sixty eighth psalm, which begins, "let God arise", &c. Psalms 68:1, words used by Moses when the ark set forward, Numbers 10:35.

g Suidas in voce κυμβαλα.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Played - i. e. danced to music vocal and instrumental (see Judges 16:25 note).

Cornets - Rather, from the etymology of the Hebrew word (to shake), and their being coupled with the cymbals, and being rendered sistra in the Vulgate, some kind of instrument with bells or rings, which gave a sound by being shaken.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Samuel 6:5. On all manner of instruments made of fir wood — This place should be corrected from the parallel place, 1 Chronicles 13:8: "All Israel played before God, with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries," c. Instead of בכל עז bechol atsey, "with all woods" or "trees" the parallel place is bechol oz. "with all their strength:" this makes a good sense, the first makes none. The Septuagint, in this place, has the verse reading; εν ισχυΐ, with might.
