¹ We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedo'nia,

¹ I do you to wit brethren of the grace of god which is geven in the congregacions of Macedonia

¹ I must acquaint you, brethren, with the contribution which the churches of Macedonia have religiously made, ^1-4 Now, friends, I want to report on the surprising and generous ways in which God is working in the churches in Macedonia province. Fierce troubles came down on the people of those churches, pushing them to the very limit. The trial exposed their true colors: They were incredibly happy, though desperately poor. The pressure triggered something totally unexpected: an outpouring of pure and generous gifts. I was there and saw it for myself. They gave offerings of whatever they could—far more than they could afford!—pleading for the privilege of helping out in the relief of poor Christians.

Going from Greedy to Generous

¹ Now listen to this, cowboys. Y'all ain't going to believe what God has done for all the outfits in Macedonia. ² During a severe trial brought about by affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.^{(C1) 2} How that in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their ioy, and their deepe pouertie, abounded vnto the riches of their liberalitie.

² How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. ² for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and ^(b)their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.² that in a ^(F1)great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the ^(C1)wealth of their liberality. ² They have been tested by great troubles, and they are very poor. But they gave much because of their great joy. ² for during an ordeal of severe distress, their abundant joy and their deep poverty together overflowed in the ^(C1)wealth of their lavish generosity.² that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the ^(C1)wealth of their liberality.² that in a great testing by affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the ^(C1)richness of their ^(F1)generosity.² In the terrible ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich generosity. ² Although they were going through hard times and were very poor, they were glad to give generously. ² Despite severe trials, and even though they are desperately poor, their joy has overflowed in a wealth of generosity.

² that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty has abounded to the riches of their [free-hearted] liberality. ² These believers have been tested by great troubles, and they are very poor. But their great joy caused them to be very generous in their giving.² Because in great triall of affliction their ioy abounded, and their most extreeme pouertie abounded vnto their rich liberalitie.² How that in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep rooted poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. ² They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor. ² that with a great ordeal of affliction, the abundance of their joy and the extreme depth of their poverty have overflowed to the wealth of their generosity. ² that in much testing of trouble, the overflowing of their joy and the depth of their poverty abounded to the riches of their generosity. ² how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their ^[a]liberality. ² How while they were undergoing every sort of trouble, and were in the greatest need, they took all the greater joy in being able to give freely to the needs of others.² how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality. ² In spite of a terrible ordeal of suffering, their abundant joy, along with their deep poverty, has resulted in the abundance of their generosity.[xr] ² that in the great trial of their affliction there hath been an abounding of their joy; and the depth of their poverty hath been exceeded by the riches of their simplicity.² that in the great trial of their affliction, there was an abounding to their joy, and the depth of their poverty was exuberant in the riches of their liberality.² Howe that ye aboundance of their reioycing is, that they are tryed with muche tribulation. And though they were exceedyng poore, yet haue they geuen exceedyng rychlye, and that in singlenesse.² how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. ² how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality. ² That in a great trial of affliction, their overflowing joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality:² how, while passing through great trouble, their boundless joy even amid their deep poverty has overflowed to increase their generous liberality.² that in myche asaiyng of tribulacioun, the plente of the ioye of hem was, and the hiyeste pouert of hem was plenteuouse `in to the richessis of the symplenesse of hem.² how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality.² That in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy, and their deep poverty, abounded to the riches of their liberality. ² that during a severe ordeal of suffering, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in the wealth of their generosity. ² that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. ² They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. ² They have been put to the test by much trouble, but they have much joy. They have given much even though they were very poor. ² for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. ² That, in a great testing of tribulation, the superabounding of their joy and their deep destitution, superabounded unto the riches of their liberality;² That in much experience of tribulation, they have had abundance of joy and their very deep poverty hath abounded unto the riches of their simplicity.² for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part.² how that the aboundaunce of their reioysing is that they are tried wt moche tribulacio. And therto though they were excedinge poore yet haue they geue excedinge richly and that in singlenesse.² because in much trial of tribulation the abundance of their joy, and their deep poverty, did abound to the riches of their liberality;² because in much trial of tribulation the abundance of their joy, and their deep poverty, abounded to the riches of their liberality;² For their reioysinge was most abundaunt, whan they were tryed by moch trouble: & though they were exceadinge poore, yet haue they geue exceadinge richely, and that in synglenesse.² who tho' labouring under great trial of affliction, and extreme poverty, have notwithstanding with exceeding cheerfulness contributed very liberally: being forward of themselves to the utmost of their power, ² These cowboys have been tested to the limit. They were in one wreck after another. These cowboys didn't have two halters between them, but they were happy riding for the brand. This type of elation led them to go from greedy to generous. ³ I can testify that, according to their ability and even beyond their ability, of their own accord, ³ For to their power (I beare record) yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselues:

³ For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; ³ For they gave ^(c)according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,³ For I testify that ^(C1)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave voluntarily, ³ I can tell you that they gave as much as they were able and even more than they could afford. No one told them to do it. ³ For I testify that ^(C1)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave voluntarily,³ For I testify that ^(C1)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord,³ For I testify that ^(C1)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord,³ For I testify that they gave according to their ability and even beyond it. Of their own accord, ³ They gave as much as they could afford and even more, simply because they wanted to. ³ I tell you they have not merely given according to their means, but of their own free will they have given beyond their means.

³ For according to [their] power, I bear witness, and beyond [their] power, [they were] willing of their own accord, ³ I can tell you that they gave as much as they were able and even more than they could afford. No one told them to do this. It was their idea.³ For to their power (I beare record) yea, and beyonde their power, they were willing,³ For to their power, I can testify, yes, and beyond their power they have shared of their own accord. ³ I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free will ³ I testify that they gave^[a] according to their ability, and beyond their ability, by their own choice, ³ For I testify that according to their ability and beyond their ability, they willingly gave , ³ For according to their power, I bear witness, yea and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord, ³ For I give them witness, that as they were able, and even more than they were able, they gave from the impulse of their hearts,³ For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord, ³ I can testify that by their own free will they have given to the utmost of their ability, yes, even beyond their ability. ³ For I testify, that according to their power, and more than their power, in the willingness of their soul,³ For I testify that, according to their ability, and beyond their ability, in the spontaneity of their mind,³ For to their powers (I beare them recorde) yea & beyonde their powers, they were wyllyng.³ For according to their power, I bear witness, yea and beyond their power, [they gave] of their own accord, ³ For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord, ³ That to their power, I testify, and beyond their power, they were willing of themselves,³ For I can testify that to the utmost of their power, and even beyond their power, they have of their own free will given help.³ For Y bere witnessyng to hem, aftir miyt and aboue miyt thei weren wilful,³ For according to their power, I bear witness, yes and beyond their power, [they gave] of their own accord,³ For to [their] power, I bear testimony, and even beyond [their] power, [they were] willing of themselves; ³ For I testify, they gave according to their means and beyond their means. They did so voluntarily, ³ For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing,

³ For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. ³ They gave as much as they could because they wanted to. ³ For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, ³ That, according to power, I bear witness, and beyond power, of their own accord, they acted , - ³ For according to their power (I bear them witness) and beyond their power, they were willing:³ For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will,³ For to their powers (I beare recorde) yee and beyonde their power they were willynge of their owne accorde³ because, according to [their] power, I testify, and above [their] power, they were willing of themselves,³ because, according to [their] power, I testify, and above [their] power, they were willing of themselves,³ For to their power (I beare recorde) yee and beyonde their power, they were wyllinge of their awne acorde,³ (I bear them witness) yea, and beyond their power: ³ They didn't just give a little of what they had. They gave more'n what they could actually afford. It wasn't because anyone asked them to do it, either. It was their idea and the result was astonishing joy on their part. ⁴ they begged us earnestly for the privilege of sharing^(C1) in the ministry to the saints, ⁴ Praying vs with much entreatie, that we would receiue the gift, and take vpon vs the fellowship of the ministring to the Saints.

⁴ Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. ⁴ begging us earnestly ^(d)for the favor^[b] of taking part in ^(e)the relief of the saints—⁴ begging us with much urging for the ^(C1)favor ^(F1)of participation in the ^(F2)(C2)support of the ^(F3)saints, ⁴ But they begged and pleaded with us to let them share in this service for God's people. ⁴ begging us insistently for the ^(C1)privilege of participating in the ^(C2)service for the support of the saints in Jerusalem.⁴ begging us with much urging for the ^(C1)favor ^(F1)of participation in the ^(F2)(C2)support of the ^(F3)saints,⁴ begging us with much urging for the ^(C1)grace ^(F1)of sharing in the ^(C2)ministry to the saints,⁴ they pleaded earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. ⁴ They even asked and begged us to let them have the joy of giving their money for God's people. ⁴ They begged and pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service for God's people.

⁴ begging of us with much entreaty [to give effect to] the grace and fellowship of the service which [was to be rendered] to the saints. ⁴ But they asked us again and again—they begged us to let them share in this service for God's people.⁴ And praied vs with great instance that we woulde receiue the grace, and felowship of the ministring which is toward the Saints.⁴ And besought us most earnestly that they might be partakers in the gift for the ministration to the saints. ⁴ they begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea. ⁴ requesting of us with much exhortation the favor and the fellowship of the ministry to the saints, ⁴ with much entreating, begging us to receive of us the grace and the fellowship of the ministry to the saints. ⁴ beseeching us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the ministering to the saints: ⁴ Seriously requesting us that they might have a part in this grace of being servants to the needs of the saints:⁴ begging us with much entreaty in regard to this grace and the fellowship in the service to the holy ones. ⁴ They begged us earnestly for the privilege[fn] of participating in this ministry to the saints.[xr] ⁴ they besought of us, with much supplication, that they might participate in the beneficence of the ministry for the saints.⁴ they besought us, with much entreaty, that they might participate in the beneficence of the ministration to the saints.⁴ And prayed vs with great instaunce that we woulde receaue this grace and societie of the ministerie to ye saintes.⁴ beseeching us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the ministering to the saints: ⁴ begging us with much entreaty in regard to this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints. ⁴ Praying us with much intreaty, to receive the gift and take a part in ministring it to the saints.⁴ With earnest entreaty they begged from us the favour of being allowed to share in the service now being rendered to God's people.⁴ with myche monestyng bisechynge vs the grace and the comynyng of mynystring, that is maad to hooli men.⁴ imploring us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints:⁴ Praying us with much entreaty, that we would receive the gift, and [take upon us] the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. ⁴ begging us with great earnestness for the blessing and fellowship of helping the saints. ⁴ imploring us with much urgency that we would receive [fn] the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. ⁴ They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem.^{[b] 4} They asked from their hearts if they could help the Christians in Jerusalem. ⁴ begging us earnestly for the privilege^[b] of sharing in this ministry to the saints— ⁴ With much exhortation, entreating of us the favour and the fellowship of the ministry which was for the saints; - ⁴ With much entreaty begging of us the grace and communication of the ministry that is done toward the saints.⁴ begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints--⁴ and prayed vs with great instaunce that we wolde receave their benefite and suffre them to be parttakers with other in ministrynge to the saynctes.⁴ with much entreaty calling on us to receive the favour and the fellowship of the ministration to the saints,⁴ with much plea calling on us to receive the favor and the fellowship of the ministry to the holy ones,⁴ and prayed vs with greate instauce, that we wolde receaue their benefite and fellishippe of the hadreachinge that is done for the sayntes:⁴ earnestly intreating me to take the gift, and the charge of conveying it to the converts at Jerusalem: ⁴ They rode up to me every single day and asked—they actually begged me to take their offering so it could help others ride for the brand. ⁵ and not just as we had hoped. Instead, they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us by God’s will.^{(C1) 5} And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gaue their owne selues to the Lord, and vnto vs, by the will of God.

⁵ And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. ⁵ and this, not as we expected, but they ^(f)gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.⁵ and this, not as we had ^(F1)expected, but they first ^(C1)gave themselves to the Lord and to us by ^(C2)the will of God. ⁵ And they gave in a way we did not expect: They first gave themselves to the Lord and to us. This is what God wants. ⁵ Not only did they give materially as we had hoped, but first they ^(C1)gave themselves to the Lord and to us as His representatives by ^(C2)the will of God disregarding their personal interests and giving as much as they possibly could.⁵ and this, not as we had ^(F1)expected, but they first ^(C1)gave themselves to the Lord and to us by ^(C2)the will of God.⁵ and this, not as we had ^(F1)expected, but they first ^(C1)gave themselves to the Lord and to us by ^(C2)the will of God.⁵ And not only did they do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, because it was the will of God. ⁵ And they did more than we had hoped. They gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, just as God wanted them to do. ⁵ Also, they didn't do this in the way we had expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord, which means, by God's will, to us.

⁵ And not according as we hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord, and to us by God's will. ⁵ And they gave in a way that we did not expect: They gave themselves to the Lord and to us before they gave their money. This is what God wants.⁵ And this they did, not as we looked for: but gaue their owne selues, first to the Lorde, and after vnto vs by the will of God,⁵ And this they did, not only as we expected, but first they gave themselves to our LORD, and then to us by the will of God. ⁵ It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to the Lord; and then, by God's will they gave themselves to us as well. ⁵ and not just as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, by the will of God. ⁵ And not as we hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us through the will of God, ⁵ and this, not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God. ⁵ And going even farther than our hope, they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us after the purpose of God.⁵ This was not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God. ⁵ We did not expect that! They gave themselves to the Lord first and then to us, since this was God's will. ⁵ And not as we had supposed, but they gave themselves up first to the Lord, and also to us by the will of Aloha.⁵ 5 And not [fn] as we had expected, but they first gave themselves unto the Lord, and to us by the will of God. ⁵ [And this they dyd] not as we loked for: but gaue their owne selues first to the Lorde, and [after] vnto vs by the wyll of God.⁵ and [this], not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us by the will of God. ⁵ This was not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God. ⁵ And this they did, not as we hoped; but first gave themselves to the Lord, and to us by the will of God:⁵ They not only did this, as we had expected, but first of all in obedience to God's will they gave their own selves to the Lord and to us.⁵ And not as we hopiden, but thei yauen hem silf first to the Lord, aftirward to vs bi the wille of God.⁵ and [this], not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.⁵ And [this they did], not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us by the will of God: ⁵ And they did this not just as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us by the will of God. ⁵ And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. ⁵ They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do. ⁵ It was more than we expected. They gave themselves to the Lord first. Then they gave themselves to us to be used as the Lord wanted. ⁵ and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, ⁵ And, not merely as we hoped, but, themselves, gave they, first, unto the Lord and unto us through God's will,⁵ And not as we hoped: but they gave their own selves, first to the Lord, then to us by the will of God;⁵ and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God.⁵ And this they did not as we loked for: but gave their awne selves fyrst to the lorde and after vnto vs by the will of God:⁵ and not according as we expected, but themselves they did give first to the Lord, and to us, through the will of God,⁵ and not according as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the LORD, and to us, through the will of God,⁵ And not as we loked for, but gaue ouer them selues first to the LODRE, and afterwarde vnto vs by ye wyl of God,⁵ and in this they out-did my expectation; such was the divine pleasure, they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then made me an offer to go themselves to Corinth. ^5-7 This was totally spontaneous, entirely their own idea, and caught us completely off guard. What explains it was that they had first given themselves unreservedly to God and to us. The other giving simply flowed out of the purposes of God working in their lives. That's what prompted us to ask Titus to bring the relief offering to your attention, so that what was so well begun could be finished up. You do so well in so many things—you trust God, you're articulate, you're insightful, you're passionate, you love us—now, do your best in this, too.⁵ But the most astonishing part wasn't the money. Before they gave the money, they gave themselves wholeheartedly. If you're looking for what God wants from his cowboys, this is it!

⁶ Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. ⁶ Accordingly, ^(g)we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you ^(h)this act of grace.⁶ So we ^(C1)urged ^(C2)Titus that as he had previously ^(C3)made a beginning, so he would also complete in you ^(C4)this gracious work as well.

⁶ Titus was the one who got you started doing this good thing, so we begged him to have you finish what you had begun.

⁶ All this has led us to urge Titus to bring this same gracious gift to completion among you, since he has already made a beginning of it.

⁶ So that we begged Titus that, according as he had before begun, so he would also complete as to you this grace also;
