¹ Do you think I am a coward when I am with you and brave when I am far away? Well, I ask you to listen, because Christ himself was humble and gentle.

¹ Now it is I myself, Sha'ul, making an appeal to you with the meekness and forbearance that come from the Messiah, I who am considered timid when face-to-face with you but intimidating from a distance.

¹ BUT I Paulos beseech of you by the peacefulness and humility of the Meshiha, (I) who also in presence am humble with you, but while far off am confident over you,

¹ Now I, Paul, beseech you, by the mildness and gentleness of the Messiah, although I am mild towards you when present, but bold towards you when absent !

¹ I, Paul, ask you this myself. I do it through Christ Who is so gentle and kind. Some people say that I am gentle and quiet when I am with you, but that I have no fear and that my language is strong when I am away from you.

¹ I who am a person of a mean presence, when among you, but exert myself upon your account, when absent; I Paul intreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, not to let me exert that authority, ^1-2 And now a personal but most urgent matter; I write in the gentle but firm spirit of Christ. I hear that I'm being painted as cringing and wishy-washy when I'm with you, but harsh and demanding when at a safe distance writing letters. Please don't force me to take a hard line when I'm present with you. Don't think that I'll hesitate a single minute to stand up to those who say I'm an unprincipled opportunist. Then they'll have to eat their words.

Paul Sets 'Em Straight

¹ Listen boys, I'm writing to you with all the kindness Jesus has given me. Some of y'all think I talk big in letters and small in person, but that ain't the case at all. ² I beg you that when I am present I will not need to be bold with the confidence by which I plan to challenge certain people who think we are behaving according to the flesh.^{(C1) 2} But I beseech you, that I may not bee bold when I am present, with that confidence wherewith I thinke to be bold against some, which thinke of vs as if wee walked according to the flesh.

² But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² I beg of you ^(c)that when I am present I may not have to show ^(d)boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.² I ask that ^(C1)when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I intend to be courageous against ^(C2)some, who regard us as if we walked ^(C3)according to the flesh. ² They think we live in a worldly way, and I plan to be very bold with them when I come. I beg you that when I come I will not need to use that same boldness with you. ² I ask that ^(C1)when I do come I will not be driven to the boldness that I intend to show toward ^(C2)those few who regard us as if we walked ^(C3)according to the flesh like men without the Spirit.² I ask that ^(C1)when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against ^(C2)some, who regard us as if we walked ^(C3)according to the flesh.² But I beg that ^(C1)when I am present I need not act so courageously with the confidence that I consider to daringly use against ^(C2)some, who consider us as if we walked ^(C3)according to the flesh.² I beg you that when I come I may not need to be as bold as I expect toward those who presume that we live according to the flesh. ² Some people have said that we act like the people of this world. So when I arrive, I expect I will have to be firm and forceful in what I say to them. Please don't make me treat you that way. ² But I beg you not to force me to be intimidating when I am with you, as I expect to be toward some who regard us as living in a worldly way.

² but I beseech that present I may not be bold with the confidence with which I think to be daring towards some who think of us as walking according to flesh. ² They think our motives for what we do are like those of the world. I plan to be very bold against those people when I come. I hope I will not need to use that same boldness with you.² And this I require you, that I neede not to be bolde when I am present, with that same confidence, wherewith I thinke to bee bolde against some, which esteeme vs as though wee walked according to the flesh.² I beseech you, that when I arrive, not to be troubled by the things which I hope to carry out, for it is my purpose to put to scorn those men who regard us as if we lived after the flesh. ² I beg you not to force me to be harsh when I come; for I am sure I can deal harshly with those who say that we act from worldly motives. ² now I ask when I^[c] am present that I will not need to be bold with the confidence with which I propose to show boldness toward some who consider us as behaving according to the flesh. ² but I ask, not being present, that I may be bold with the confidence which I think to be daring against some, the ones reckoning us as walking according to flesh. ² yea, I beseech you, that I may not when present show courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² Yes, I make my request to you, so that when I am with you I may not have to make use of the authority which may be needed against some to whom we seem to be walking after the flesh.² Yes, I beg you, that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² I beg you that when I come I will not need to be courageous by daring to oppose some people who think that we are living according to the flesh.[xr] ² beseech of you, that when I come I may not be constrained with the confidence I have to be bold, as I think, over those men who imagine that we walk in the flesh.² yet I beseech of you that, when I come, I may not be compelled by the boldness that is in me to be daring, as I estimate it, towards the persons who think we walk according to the flesh.² I beseche you, that I neede not to be bolde when I am present, with that same boldnesse, wherwith I am supposed to haue ben bolde, agaynst some, which repute vs as though we walked accordyng to the fleshe.² yea, I beseech you, that I may not when present shew courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, which count of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² Yes, I beg you, that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² I beseech, that I may not when I am present be bold with that confidence wherewith I think to be bold toward some, who think of us as walking after the flesh:² I beseech you not to compel me when present to make a bold display of the confidence with which I reckon I shall show my `courage' against some who reckon that we are guided by worldly principles.² For Y preie you, that lest Y present be not bold bi the trist, in which Y am gessid to be bold in to summe, that demen vs, as if we wandren aftir the fleisch.² yes, I urge you, that I may not when present show courage with the confidence with which I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh.² But I beseech [you], that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, with which I think to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² now I ask that when I am present I may not have to be bold with the confidence that (I expect) I will dare to use against some who consider us to be behaving according to human standards. ² But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. ² Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won't have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives. ² Do not make me speak strong words to you when I come. Some people think we want the things of the world because of what we do and say. I have decided to talk to these people if I have to. ² I ask that when I am present I need not show boldness by daring to oppose those who think we are acting according to human standards.^{[a] 2} I entreat, however, that, when present, I may not be bold with the assurance wherewith I think to be daring against some who account of us as though, according to flesh, we were walking, - ² But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence wherewith I am thought to be bold, against some who reckon us as if we walked according to the flesh.² I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion.² I besech you that I nede not to be bolde when I am present (with that same confidece wher with I am supposed to be bolde) agaynst some which repute vs as though we walked carnally.² and I beseech [you], that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;² and I implore [you], that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;² I beseke you that I nede not be bolde whan I am present, & to vse yt boldnesse wherwith I am supposed to be bolde, agaynst some, which repute vs as though we walked after ye flesh:² when I am present, which I think to exercise against some, who censure me, as if I was actuated by worldly views. ² I sure hope the ones who think this reconsider their opinion before I get there. I don't want to have to use this type of boldness in person if I don't have to. We don't do what we do for worldly gain.

³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle ^(C1)according to the flesh, ³ We do live in the world, but we do not fight in the same way the world fights. ³ For though we walk in the flesh as mortal men, we are not carrying on our spiritual warfare ^(C1)according to the flesh and using the weapons of man.³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war ^(C1)according to the flesh,³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war ^(C1)according to the flesh,³ For though we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh. ³ We live in this world, but we don't act like its people ³ For although we do live in the world, we do not wage war in a worldly way;

³ For walking in flesh, we do not war according to flesh. ³ We live in this world, but we don't fight our battles in the same way the world does.³ Neuerthelesse, though wee walke in the flesh, yet we doe not warre after the flesh.³ For though we do live an earthly life, yet we do not serve worldly things. ³ It is true that we live in the world, but we do not fight from worldly motives. ³ For although we^[d] are living in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh, ³ For walking about in flesh, we do not war according to flesh; ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh ³ For though we may be living in the flesh, we are not fighting after the way of the flesh³ For though we walk in the flesh, we don't wage war according to the flesh; ³ Of course, we are living in the flesh, but we do not fight in a fleshly way. ³ For if we walk in the flesh, yet we war not according to the flesh.³ For, although we walk in the flesh, our warfare is not after the flesh.³ For though we walke in the fleshe, yet we do not warre according to ye flesh.³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we don't wage war according to the flesh; ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:³ For, though we are still living in the world, it is no worldly warfare that we are waging.³ For we walkynge in fleisch, fiyten not aftir the fleisch.³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh: ³ For though we live as human beings, we do not wage war according to human standards, ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.

³ We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. ³ It is true, we live in a body of flesh. But we do not fight like people of the world. ³ Indeed, we live as human beings,^[b] but we do not wage war according to human standards;^{[c] 3} For, though, in flesh, we walk, not, according to flesh, do we war, - ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.³ For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war,³ Neverthelesse though we walke compased with ye fleshe yet we warre not flesshlye³ for walking in the flesh, not according to the flesh do we war,³ for walking in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh,³ for though we walke in the flesh, yet fighte we not after a fleshly maner.³ for tho' I am involv'd with the world, I don't sustain the war with their poor arts: ^3-6 The world is unprincipled. It's dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.

³ We are just cowboys, but we don't fight our battles like the rest of the world does. ⁴ since the weapons of our warfare^(C1) are not of the flesh, but are powerful^(C2) through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments ⁴ (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling downe of strong holds.)

⁴ (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) ⁴ For the ^(e)weapons of ^(f)our warfare are not of the flesh but have ^(g)divine power ^(h)to destroy strongholds.⁴ for the ^(C1)weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but ^(F1)divinely powerful ^(C2)for the destruction of fortresses. ⁴ We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy's strong places. We destroy people's arguments ⁴ The ^(C1)weapons of our warfare are not physical weapons of flesh and blood. Our weapons are divinely powerful ^(C2)for the destruction of fortresses.⁴ for the ^(C1)weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but ^(F1)divinely powerful ^(C2)for the destruction of fortresses.⁴ for the ^(C1)weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but ^(F1)divinely powerful ^(C2)for the tearing down of strongholds,⁴ The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. ⁴ or fight our battles with the weapons of this world. Instead, we use God's power that can destroy fortresses. We destroy arguments ⁴ because the weapons we use to wage war are not worldly. On the contrary, they have God's power for demolishing strongholds. We demolish arguments

⁴ For the arms of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful according to God to [the] overthrow of strongholds; ⁴ The weapons we use are not human ones. Our weapons have power from God and can destroy the enemy's strong places. We destroy people's arguments,⁴ (For the weapons of our warrefare are not carnall, but mightie through God, to cast downe holdes)⁴ For the weapons which we use are not earthly weapons, but of the might of God by which we conquer rebellious strongholds; ⁴ The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons but God's powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments; ⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but powerful to God for the tearing down of fortresses, tearing down arguments ⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but powerful to God to the demolishion of strongholds, ⁴ (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds); ⁴ (For the arms with which we are fighting are not those of the flesh, but are strong before God for the destruction of high places);⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, ⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not those of the flesh. Instead, they have the power of God to demolish fortresses. We tear down arguments[xr] ⁴ For the armour of our warfare is not of the flesh, but of the power of Aloha; and by it we cast down the strong-holds of rebels,⁴ For the arms of our warfare are not those of the flesh, but those of the power of God; by which we subdue rebellious castles.⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not carnall, but myghtie through God, to cast downe strong holdes,⁴ (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strong holds); ⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, ⁴ (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the throwing down of strong-holds.)⁴ The weapons with which we fight are not human weapons, but are mighty for God in overthrowing strong fortresses.⁴ For the armuris of oure knyythod ben not fleischli, but myyti bi God to the distruccioun of strengthis. And we distrien counsels,⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds, casting down imaginations,⁴ (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) ⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments ⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, ^4 [a]We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. ⁴ We do not use those things to fight with that the world uses. We use the things God gives to fight with and they have power. Those things God gives to fight with destroy the strong-places of the devil. ⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human,^[d] but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments ⁴ For, the weapons of our warfare, are not fleshly, but mighty, by God, unto a pulling down of strongholds, - ⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty to God, unto the pulling down of fortifications, destroying counsels,⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds.⁴ For the weapes of oure warre are not carnall thinges but thynges myghty in god to cast doune stronge holdes⁴ for the weapons of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,⁴ for the weapons of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,⁴ For the wapens of oure warre are not fleshly, but mightie before God to cast downe stroge holdes,⁴ our military arms are not so defective, but divinely effectual to demolish all their ramparts; ⁴ We use weapons from God to destroy the enemy fortresses and obliterate people's best arguments against God. ⁵ and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge^(C1) of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. ⁵ Casting down imaginations, and euery high thing that exalteth it selfe against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captiuitie euery thought to the obedience of Christ:

⁵ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ We destroy arguments and ⁽ⁱ⁾every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to ^(j)obey Christ,⁵ We are destroying arguments and all ^(C1)arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the ^(C2)obedience of Christ, ⁵ and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ. ⁵ We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every ^(C1)exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the ^(C2)obedience of Christ,⁵ We are destroying speculations and every ^(C1)lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the ^(C2)obedience of Christ,⁵ as we tear down speculations and every ^(C1)lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to the ^(C2)obedience of Christ,⁵ We tear down arguments, and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. ⁵ and every bit of pride that keeps anyone from knowing God. We capture people's thoughts and make them obey Christ. ⁵ and every arrogance that raises itself up against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey the Messiah.

⁵ overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ; ⁵ and we tear down every proud idea that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We also capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.⁵ Casting downe the imaginations, and euery high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captiuitie euery thought to the obedience of Christ,⁵ Casting down imaginations, and every false thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and to capture every thought to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey Christ. ⁵ and all pride that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. ⁵ the demolishing of arguments and every high thing lifting up itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ, ⁵ casting down ^[a]imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ Putting an end to reasonings, and every high thing which is lifted up against the knowledge of God, and causing every thought to come under the authority of Christ;⁵ throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Messiah; ⁵ and every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive in order to obey Christ.[xr] ⁵ and demolish reasonings and every lofty thing that is exalted against the knowledge of Aloha, and captivate all thoughts unto the obedience of the Meshiha.⁵ And we demolish imaginations, and every lofty thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and subjugate all reasonings to obedience to the Messiah.⁵ Wherwith we ouerthrowe counsels, and euery hye thyng, that is exalted agaynst the knowledge of God, & bryng into captiuitie all imagination, to the obedience of Christe,⁵ casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ Destroying reasonings, and every high thing which exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,⁵ For we overthrow arrogant `reckonings,' and every stronghold that towers high in defiance of the knowledge of God, and we carry off every thought as if into slavery--into subjection to Christ;<sup>5</sup> and alle hiynesse that hiyeth it silf ayens the science of God, and dryuen `in to caitifte al vndirstonding in to the seruyce of Crist.⁵ and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;⁵ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ⁵ and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ. ⁵ casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, ⁵ We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. ⁵ We break down every thought and proud thing that puts itself up against the wisdom of God. We take hold of every thought and make it obey Christ. ⁵ and every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. ⁵ When we pull down, calculations, and every height that uplifteth itself against the knowledge of God, and when we bring into captivity every thought unto the obedience of the Christ,⁵ And every height that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God: and bringing into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ:⁵ We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,⁵ wherwith we overthrowe ymaginacyons and every hye thynge that exalteh it silfe agaynst the knowledge of god and brynge into captivite all vnderstondynge to the obedience of Christ⁵ reasonings bringing down, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,⁵ bringing down reasonings, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,⁵ wherwith we ouerthrowe ymaginacions, & euery hye thinge yt exalteth it selfe agaynst the knowlege of God, and brynge in to captiuyte all vnderstondinge to the obedience of Christ,⁵ to level all the barriers they contrive for obstructing the divine doctrine, and to make their pride captive to the authority of Christ. ⁵ We smash every proud opinion that is contrary to the knowledge of God. We rope every thought and break it to lead by obeying Christ. ⁶ And we are ready to punish any disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
