1 Twenty years old, was Ahaz when he began to reign, and, sixteen years, reigned he in Jerusalem, - but he did not that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, like David his father;

Instead he followed in the track of Israel in the north, even casting metal figurines for worshiping the pagan Baal gods. He participated in the outlawed burning of incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and—incredibly!—indulged in the outrageous practice of "passing his sons through the fire," a truly abominable thing he picked up from the pagans God had earlier thrown out of the country. He also joined in the activities of the neighborhood sex-and-religion shrines that flourished all over the place.

Ahaz Succeeds Jotham in Judah

1 (C1)Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and (C2)he did not do right in the sight of the LORD as David his father had done.2 for he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel(C1) and made cast images of the Baals.(C2) 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Yisra'el, and made also molten images for the Ba`alim.

2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim. 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made (b)metal images for (c)the Baals, 2 Ahaz did the same things the kings of Israel had done. He made metal idols to worship Baal. 2 He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel; he also made images of the Baals. 2 (C1)Instead he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and even (C2)made cast images for the Baals.2 (C1)But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also (C2)made cast metal images for the Baals.2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for the Baals. 2 But he walked in the wayes of ye Kings of Israel, & made euen molten images for Baalim.2 (C1)But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also (C2)made molten images for the Baals.2 Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even made cast images of the Baals. 2 and was as sinful as the kings of Israel. He made idols of the god Baal, 2 Rather, he lived in the manner of the kings of Isra'el and made cast metal images for the ba‘alim.

2 but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and even made molten images for the Baals; 2 He followed the bad example of the kings of Israel. He used molds to make idols to worship the Baal gods.2 But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also made altars for the idols. 2 and followed the example of the kings of Israel. He had metal images of Baal made, 2 But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and also made molten idols for the Baals. 2 but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also made casted images for the Baals.2 but walked in the wayes of the kinges of Israel, and made molten ymages vnto Baalim, 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for the Baalim. 2 But he went in the ways of the kings of Israel and made images of metal for the Baals.2 For he walked in the wayes of the kinges of Israel, & made moulten images for Baalim.2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for the Baalim.2 For he walked in the wayes of the Kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim. 2 But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, for he made graven images. 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for the Baalim. 2 but he yede in the weies of the kyngis of Israel. Ferthermore and he yetyde ymagis to Baalym.2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also made molten images for the Baalim.2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made molded images for the Baals. 2 Instead, he followed the example of the kings of Israel. He cast metal images for the worship of Baal. 2 But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He also made objects to look like the false gods of Baal. 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made cast images for the Baals; 2 but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, - yea, even molten images, made he to the Baalim;2 But walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; moreover also he cast statues for Baalim.2 but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made molten images for the Ba'als;2 and walketh in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also, molten images hath made for Baalim,2 and walks in the ways of the kings of Israel, and has also made molten images for Ba‘alim,2 (C1)But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also (C2)made molten images for the Baals.3 He burned incense in Ben Hinnom Valley(C1) and burned his children in(F1)(C2) the fire, imitating the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.(C3) 3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Yisra'el.

3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. 3 and (d)he made offerings in the (e)Valley of the Son of Hinnom and (f)burned his sons as an offering,[a] according to (g)the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 3 He burned incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and made his children pass through the fire. He did the same hateful sins as the nations had done whom the Lord had forced out of the land ahead of the Israelites. 3 He offered sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and passed his sons through the fire, a horrible sin practiced by the nations whom the Lord drove out before the Israelites. 3 And (C1)he burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom and (C2)burned his sons as an offering, (C3)in accordance with the repulsive acts of the pagan nations whom the LORD had driven out before the sons (descendants) of Israel.3 Furthermore, (C1)he burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom, and (C2)burned his sons in fire, (C3)according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out from the sons of Israel.3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel. 3 Moreouer he burnt incense in the valley of Ben-hinnom, & burnt his sonnes with fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.3 Moreover, (C1)he offered offerings in smoke in the valley of Ben-hinnom and (C2)burned his sons in the fire, (C3)according to the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh had dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.3 Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire(a), according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out before the Israelites. 3 and he offered sacrifices in Hinnom Valley. Worst of all, Ahaz sacrificed his own sons, which was a disgusting custom of the nations that the Lord had forced out of Israel. 3 Moreover, he made offerings in the Ben-Hinnom Valley and even burned up his own children as sacrifices, in keeping with the horrible practices of the pagans, whom Adonai had thrown out ahead of the people of Isra'el.

3 and he burned incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burned his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that Jehovah had dispossessed from before the children of Israel. 3 He burned incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom[a] and sacrificed his own sons by burning them in the fire. He did the same terrible sins that the peoples living in that land did. The Lord had forced them out when the Israelites entered that land.3 Moreover he burned incense in great valleys, and passed his son through the fire, according to the custom of the nations whom the LORD had destroyed from before the children of Israel. 3 burned incense in Hinnom Valley, and even sacrificed his own sons as burnt offerings to idols, imitating the disgusting practice of the people whom the Lord had driven out of the land as the Israelites advanced. 3 And he himself burned incense in the valley of Ben-Hinnom and burned his sons in the fire, according to the detestable practices of the nations whom Yahweh drove out before the Israelites. 3 And he himself burned incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burned his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that Jehovah drove out from before the sons of Israel;3 and brent incense in the valley of the children of Hennon, and bret his awne sonnes in ye fire, after the abhominacions of the Heithen, who the LORDE expelled before the childre of Israel. 3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Jehovah cast out before the children of Israel. 3 More than this, he had offerings burned in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and made his children go through fire, copying the disgusting ways of the nations whom the Lord had sent out of the land before the children of Israel.3 He offered incense in the valley of the sonne of Hinnon, and burnt his children in fire, after the abhominations of the heathen whom the Lorde cast out before the children of Israel.3 Moreover he offered in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.3 Moreouer, he burnt incense in the valley of the sonne of Hinnom, & burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen, whome the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. 3 And he sacrificed to their idols in the valley of Benennom, and passed his children through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel. 3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. 3 He it is that brente encense in the valey of Beennon, and purgide hise sones bi fier bi the custom of hethene men, whiche the Lord killide in the comyng of the sones of Israel.3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his sons in the fire, according to the disgusting behaviors of the nations whom Yahweh cast out before the sons of Israel.3 Moreover, he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.3 He burned incense in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burned his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. 3 He offered sacrifices in the valley of Ben-Hinnom, even sacrificing his own sons in the fire.[a] In this way, he followed the detestable practices of the pagan nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites. 3 He burned special perfume in the valley of Ben-Hinnom. And he burned his sons in fire, following the hated ways of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the sons of Israel. 3 and he made offerings in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and made his sons pass through fire, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 3 and, he, burned incense, in the valley of the son of Hinnom,-and burnt his sons, in the fire, according to the abominable ways of the nations, whom Yahweh dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.3 It was he that burnt incense in the valley of Benennom, and consecrated his sons in the fire according to the manner of the nations, which the Lord slew at the coming of the children of Israel.3 and he burned incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burned his sons as an offering, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel.3 and himself hath made perfume in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burneth his sons with fire according to the abominations of the nations that Jehovah dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel,3 and has made incense himself in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burns his sons with fire according to the abominations of the nations that YHWH dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel,3 Moreover, (C1)he burned incense in the valley of Ben-hinnom and (C2)burned his sons in fire, (C3)according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out before the sons of Israel.4 He sacrificed and burned incense on the high places,(C1) on the hills, and under every green tree.

4 He sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 And he sacrificed and (h)made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree. 4 Ahaz offered sacrifices and burned incense at the places where gods were worshiped, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.4 He also sacrificed and (C1)burned incense on the high places of pagan worship, on the hills and under every green tree.4 He sacrificed and (C1)burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.4 He sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the hie places, and on hilles, and vnder euery greene tree.4 He also sacrificed and (C1)offered offerings in smoke on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

Judah Defeated by Aram

(Isaiah 1:1-9 4 Ahaz offered sacrifices at the local shrines,[a] as well as on every hill and in the shade of large trees. 4 He also sacrificed and offered on the high places, on the hills and under any green tree.

4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 Ahaz offered sacrifices and burned incense in the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.4 And he sacrificed also and burned incense upon the altars and on high places and under every beautiful tree. 4 At the pagan places of worship, on the hills, and under every shady tree Ahaz offered sacrifices and burned incense. 4 And he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops, and under every flourishing tree.4 and sacrificed and burned incense in the high places, and on the heights, and under every green tree.4 And he dyd sacrifice and brent incense vpon the hye places and vpon the hilles, and amoge all grene trees. 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.4 And he made offerings and had perfumes burned in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.4 He offered also and burnt incense in the high places, and on mountaynes, and vnder euery greene tree.4 And he sacrificed and offered in the high places, and on the hills, and under every leafy tree.4 Hee sacrificed also, and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hils, and vnder euery greene tree. 4 And he burnt incense upon the high places, and upon the roofs, and under every shady tree. 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 Also he made sacrifice, and brente encense in hiy places, and in hillis, and vndur ech tree ful of bowis.4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the pagan shrines and on the hills and under every green tree. 4 He gave gifts in worship and burned special perfume on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree. 4 He sacrificed and made offerings on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and upon the hills, - and under every green tree.4 He sacrificed also, and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.4 and sacrificeth and maketh perfume in high places, and on the heights, and under every green tree.4 and sacrifices and makes incense in high places, and on the heights, and under every green tree.4 He sacrificed and (C1)burned incense on the high places, on the hills and under every green tree.

5 So the Lord his God handed Ahaz over(C1) to the king of Aram. He attacked him and took many captives to Damascus.

5 Therefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they struck him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Dammesek. He was also delivered into the hand of the king of Yisra'el, who struck him with a great slaughter.

5 Wherefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.

Judah Defeated

5 (i)Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.

5 So the Lord his God handed over Ahaz to the king of Aram. The Arameans defeated Ahaz and took many people of Judah as prisoners to Damascus.

He also handed over Ahaz to Pekah king of Israel, and Pekah's army killed many soldiers of Ahaz.

5 The Lord his God handed him over to the king of Syria. The Syrians defeated him and deported many captives to Damascus. He was also handed over to the king of Israel, who thoroughly defeated him.

Judah Is Invaded

5 Therefore (C1)the LORD his God handed over Ahaz to the king of Aram (Syria), who defeated him and led away a great number of the people as captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also handed over to the king of Israel, who struck Judah with a great slaughter.

Judah Is Invaded

5 Therefore (C1)the LORD his God handed him over to the king of Aram; and they (F1)defeated him and carried from him a great number of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also handed over to the king of Israel, who struck him with heavy casualties.5 Therefore Yahweh his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they struck him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. He was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with a great slaughter. 5 Wherefore the Lorde his God deliuered him into the hand of the King of the Aramites, & they smote him, & tooke of his, many prisoners, and brought them to Damascus: and he was also deliuered into the hande of the King of Israel, which smote him with a great slaughter.

Judah Carried Away by Aram

5 So, (C1)Yahweh his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they struck him and carried away from him a great number of captives and brought them to Damascus. And he was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with a great slaughter.)5 So the LORD his God delivered Ahaz into the hand of the king of Aram, who attacked him and took many captives to Damascus. Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.5-6 Ahaz and the people of Judah sinned and turned away from the Lord, the God their ancestors had worshiped. So the Lord punished them by letting their enemies defeat them.

The king of Syria attacked Judah and took many of its people to Damascus as prisoners. King Pekah[b] of Israel later defeated Judah and killed one hundred twenty thousand of its bravest soldiers in one day.

5 Because of this, Adonai his God handed him over to the king of Aram; they attacked him and carried off from his people a great number of captives, bringing them to Dammesek.

In addition, he was handed over to the king of Isra'el, who inflicted on him a great massacre.

5 Therefore Jehovah his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.5-6 Because Ahaz did these things, the Lord his God let the king of Aram defeat him. The king and his army defeated Ahaz and took many people of Judah as prisoners to the city of Damascus. Ahaz also suffered a terrible defeat by the king of Israel, Pekah son of Remaliah. Pekah and his army killed 120,000 of the bravest soldiers in Judah in one day. All this happened because the people of Judah had turned away from the Lord, the God their ancestors worshiped. 5 Therefore the LORD God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and he smote him with a great slaughter, and carried away a great multitude of people captive and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.5-6 (c)Because King Ahaz sinned, the Lord his God let the king of Syria defeat him and take a large number of Judeans back to Damascus as prisoners. The Lord also let the king of Israel, Pekah son of Remaliah, defeat Ahaz and kill 120,000 of the bravest Judean soldiers in one day. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, permitted this to happen, because the people of Judah had abandoned him.

5 Then Yahweh his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram[b] who defeated him and captured many captives from him and brought them to Damascus. Moreover, he was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, and he defeated him by a great attack. 5 And Jehovah his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, and they struck him, and captured from him a great captivity, and brought them to Damascus. And he also was given into the handof the king of Israel, and he struck himwith a great destruction.5 Therfore dyd the LORDE his God delyuer him in to the hande of the kynge of Syria, so that they smote him, and caryed awaye a greate multitude of his men presoners, and broughte them to Damascon. He was geuen also vnder the hande of the kynge of Israel, so yt he dyd a greate slaughter vpon him.

5 Wherefore Jehovah his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 5 So the Lord his God gave him up into the hands of the king of Aram; and they overcame him, and took away a great number of his people as prisoners to Damascus. Then he was given into the hands of the king of Israel, who sent great destruction on him.5 Wherefore the Lorde his God delyuered him into the hande of the king of the Syrians, which beat him, and caryed away a great multitude of his captiue, and brought them to Damascon: And he was deliuered into the hand of the king of Israel, which smote him with a great slaughter.5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they smote him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 5 Wherefore the Lord his God deliuered him into the hand of the king of Syria, and they smote him, and caried away a great multitude of them captiues, and brought them to Damascus: And he was also deliuered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him wich a great slaughter. 5 And the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and he smote him, and took captive of them a great band of prisoners, and carried him to Damascus. Also God delivered him into the hands of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 5 And `his Lord God bitook hym in the hond of the kyng of Sirie, which smoot Achaz, and took a greet preie of his empire, and brouyten in to Damask. Also Achaz was bitakun to the hondis of the kyng of Israel, and was smytun with a greet wounde.5 Therefore Yahweh his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought [them] to Damascus. They defeated him, and carried away a great multitude of them as captives, and brought them to Damascus. Then he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with a great slaughter.

5 Because of all this, the Lord his God allowed the king of Aram to defeat Ahaz and to exile large numbers of his people to Damascus. The armies of the king of Israel also defeated Ahaz and inflicted many casualties on his army.

He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with great slaughter. 5 Wherefore Yahweh his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria, who smote him, and carried away captive from him a large body of captives, and brought them into Damascus, - yea, even into the hand of the king of Israel, was he delivered, who smote him with a great smiting.5 And the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Syria, who defeated him, and took a great booty out of his kingdom, and carried it to Damascus: he was also delivered into the hands of the king of Israel, who overthrew him with a great slaughter.5 Therefore the LORD his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. God also let the king of Israel loose on him and that resulted in a terrible slaughter: Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000 in one day, all of them first-class soldiers, and all because they had deserted God, the God of their ancestors. Furthermore, Zicri, an Ephraimite hero, killed the king's son Maaseiah, Azrikam the palace steward, and Elkanah, second in command to the king. And that wasn't the end of it—the Israelites captured 200,000 men, women, and children, besides huge cartloads of plunder that they took to Samaria.
