Paul Remembers His Visit
1 You yourselves know, dear brothers and sisters,[a] that our visit to you was not a failure.
1 Christian brothers, you know that my visit with you was not wasted.
Paul's Ministry in Thessalonica
1 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters,[a] that our coming to you was not in vain,
1 For, yourselves, know, brethren, our entrance which was unto you - that it hath not proved void;
1 For yourselves know, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:
1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain;
1 For ye youre selves knowe brethren of oure entraunce in vnto you howe that it was not in vayne:
1 For yourselves have known, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it did not become vain,
1 For you have known, brothers, that our entrance to you has not been in vain,
1 For ye youre selues (brethren) knowe of oure intrauce vnto you, how that it was not in vayne,
1 And you are satisfied, my brethren, that our address to you was not fallacious: 1-2 So, friends, it's obvious that our visit to you was no waste of time. We had just been given rough treatment in Philippi, as you know, but that didn't slow us down. We were sure of ourselves in God, and went right ahead and said our piece, presenting God's Message to you, defiant of the opposition.
1 You cowboys and cowgirls remember that we didn't just make a social call when we came to work your pastures. Paul Remembers the Branding at Thessalonica
2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. 2 But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated (c)at Philippi, as you know, (d)we had boldness in our God (e)to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much (f)conflict.2 but after we had already suffered and been (C1)treated abusively in (C2)Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God (C3)to speak to you the (C4)gospel of God (F1)amid much (F2)(C5)opposition. 2 Before we came to you, we suffered in Philippi. People there insulted us, as you know, and many people were against us. But our God helped us to be brave and to tell you his Good News. 2 but after we had already suffered and been (C1)mistreated in (C2)Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God (C3)to speak to you the (C4)gospel of God amid much (F1)(C5)opposition.2 but after we had already suffered and been (C1)mistreated in (C2)Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God (C3)to speak to you the (C4)gospel of God amid much (C5)struggle.2 As you are aware, we had already endured suffering and shameful treatment in Philippi. But in the face of strong opposition, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God. 2 As you remember, we had been mistreated and insulted at Philippi. But God gave us the courage to tell you the good news about him, even though many people caused us trouble. 2 On the contrary, although we had already suffered and been outraged in Philippi, as you know, we had the courage, united with our God, to tell you the Good News even under great pressure.
2 but, having suffered before and been insulted, even as ye know, in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the glad tidings of God with much earnest striving. 2 Before we came to you, people in Philippi abused us with insults and made us suffer. You know all about that. And then, when we came to you, many people there caused trouble for us. But our God gave us the courage we needed to tell you his Good News.2 But euen after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated at Philippi, (as ye knowe) we were bolde in our God, to speake vnto you the Gospell of God with much striuing.2 But from the beginning we suffered and as you know were treated shamefully, at Philip''pi; then with more struggle but with confidence in our God, we preached to you the gospel of Christ. 2 (a)You know how we had already been mistreated and insulted in Philippi before we came to you in Thessalonica. And even though there was much opposition, our God gave us courage to tell you the Good News that comes from him. 2 but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, just as you know, we had the courage in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition. 2 But also suffering before and being insulted in Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak the gospel of God to you in much agony.2 but after we had already suffered and been (C1)outrageously treated in (C2)Philippi, as you know, yet in the strength of our God we summoned the courage (C3)to proclaim boldly to you the (C4)good news of God regarding salvation amid great (C5)opposition. 2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as ye know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak unto you the [a]gospel of God in much conflict. 2 But after we had first undergone much pain and been cruelly attacked as you saw, at Philippi, by the help of God we gave you the good news without fear, though everything was against us.2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict. 2 As you know, we suffered persecution and were mistreated in Philippi. Yet we were encouraged by our God to tell you his[fn] gospel in spite of strong opposition.[xr] 2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, in Philipos, and then (even) in great conflict we spoke with you with the confidence of our God the gospel of the Meshiha.2 but we first suffered and were treated with indignity, as ye know, at Philippi; and then, in a great agony, with confidence in our God, we addressed to you the gospel of the Messiah.2 But euen after that we had suffred before, and were shamefully entreated as ye knowe, at Philippos, we were bolde in our God, to speake vnto you the Gospell of God, in much stryuyng.2 but having suffered before, and been shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God in much conflict. 2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the gospel of God in much conflict. 2 and had been shamefully intreated at Philippi, as ye know, we were bold thro' our God to speak to you the gospel of God with much contention.2 But, as you will remember, after we had already met with suffering and outrage at Philippi, we summoned up boldness, by the help of our God, to tell you God's Good News amid much opposition.2 but first we suffriden, and weren punyschid with wrongis, as ye witen in Filippis, and hadden trust in oure Lord, to speke to you the gospel of God in myche bisynesse.2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.2 But even after we had suffered before, and were shamefully treated, as ye know, at Phillippi, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God with much contention. 2 But although we suffered earlier and were mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of much opposition. 2 But even [fn] after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. 2 You know how badly we had been treated at Philippi just before we came to you and how much we suffered there. Yet our God gave us the courage to declare his Good News to you boldly, in spite of great opposition. 2 Just before we came to you, we had been in the city of Philippi. You know how they worked against us and made us suffer. But God helped us preach the Good News to you without fear, even while many people hated us and made it hard for us. 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 2 But, though we had previously suffered, and been insulted, even as ye know, in Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak unto you the glad-message of God with much conflict.2 But having suffered many things before and been shamefully treated, (as you know) at Philippi, we had confidence in our God, to speak unto you the gospel of God in much carefulness.2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philip'pi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition.2 but even after that we had suffered before and were shamfully entreated at Phillippos (as ye well knowe) then were we bolde in oure God to speake vnto you the gospell of God with moche strivynge.2 but having both suffered before, and having been injuriously treated (as ye have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the good news of God in much conflict,2 but having both suffered before, and having been mistreated (as you have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak to you the good news of God in much conflict,2 but as we had suffred afore, & were shamefully intreated at Philippos (as ye knowe) we were bolde in oure God, to speake vnto you ye Gospel of God with moch stryuynge.2 on the contrary, notwithstanding the outrages, you know we suffer'd at Philippi, we had still the resolution, by the divine assistance, to preach the gospel of God to you without reserve against all opposition. 2 Even though we went through hell in Philippi, we boldly told y'all the same message that caused us so much trouble there. We pulled out our running iron to change people's brands from the world to God's brand through Jesus Christ. And there were plenty of people who wanted to stop us at any cost. 3 For our exhortation didn’t come from error or impurity(C1) or an intent to deceive.(C2) 3 For our exhortation was not of deceite, nor of vncleannesse, nor in guile:
3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 3 For (g)our appeal does not spring from (h)error or (i)impurity or (j)any attempt to deceive,3 For our (C1)exhortation does not come from (C2)error or (C3)impurity or (F1)by way of (C4)deceit; 3 Our appeal does not come from lies or wrong reasons, nor were we trying to trick you. 3 For our (C1)exhortation does not come from (C2)error or (C3)impurity or (F1)by way of (C4)deceit;3 For our (C1)exhortation does not come from (C2)error or (C3)impurity or (F1)by way of (C4)deceit;3 For our appeal does not arise from deceit or ulterior motives or trickery. 3 We didn't have any hidden motives when we won you over, and we didn't try to fool or trick anyone. 3 For the appeal we make does not flow from error or from impure motives, neither do we try to trick people.
3 For our exhortation [was] not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile; 3 When we encourage people to believe the Good News, it's not out of wrong motives. We are not trying to trick or fool anyone.3 For our exhortation was not by deceite, nor by vncleannes, nor by guile.3 For our comfort did not spring from deception, nor from uncleanness, nor from enticing speech: 3 Our appeal to you is not based on error or impure motives, nor do we try to trick anyone. 3 For our exhortation is not from error or from impurity or with deceit, 3 For our exhortation was not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile;3 For our (C1)appeal does not come from (C2)delusion or (C3)impure motives, nor is it motivated by (C4)deceit our message is complete, accurate, and based on the truth—it does not change. 3 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 3 For our witness does not come from error or from an unclean heart or from deceit:3 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception. 3 For our appeal does not spring from deceit, impure motives, or trickery.[xr] 3 For our exhortation was not from deceit, nor from uncleanness, nor from guile;3 For our exhortation proceeded not from deceit, nor from impurity, nor in guile:3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, neither of vncleannes, neither in guile:3 For our exhortation [is] not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 3 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception. 3 For our exhortation is not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile.3 For our preaching was not grounded on a delusion, nor prompted by mingled motives, nor was there fraud in it.3 And oure exortacioun is not of errour, nether of vnclennesse, nether in gile,3 For our exhortation [is] not of error, nor of impurity, nor in guile:3 For our exhortation [was] not from deceit, nor from impurity, nor in guile; 3 For the appeal we make does not come from error or impurity or with deceit, 3 For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit. 3 So you can see we were not preaching with any deceit or impure motives or trickery. 3 You remember what we said to you was true. We had no wrong desire in teaching you. We did not try to fool you. 3 For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 3 For, our exhortation, is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile,3 For our exhortation was not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deceit.3 For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile;3 Oure exhortacion was not to brynge you to erroure nor yet to vnclennes nether was it with gyle:3 for our exhortation [is] not out of deceit, nor out of uncleanness, nor in guile,3 for our exhortation [is] not out of deceit, nor out of uncleanness, nor in guile,3 For oure exhortacion was not to brynge you to erroure ner yet to vnclennes, nether was it with gyle:3 for our doctrine was free from all imposture, avarice, and fraud. 3-5 God tested us thoroughly to make sure we were qualified to be trusted with this Message. Be assured that when we speak to you we're not after crowd approval—only God approval. Since we've been put through that battery of tests, you're guaranteed that both we and the Message are free of error, mixed motives, or hidden agendas. We never used words to butter you up. No one knows that better than you. And God knows we never used words as a smoke screen to take advantage of you.3 We are not trying to change people's brand for selfish motives or personal gain. We didn't try to trick y'all like smooth talking horse traders. 4 Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted(C1) with the gospel,(C2) so we speak, not to please people, but rather God,(C3) who examines our hearts.(C4) 4 But as we were allowed of God to bee put in trust with the Gospel, euen so wee speake, not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. 4 but just as we have been approved by God (k)to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not (l)to please man, but to please God (m)who tests our hearts.4 (C1)but just as we have been approved by God to be (C2)entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, (C3)not intending to please people, but to please God, who (F1)(C4)examines our hearts. 4 But we speak the Good News because God tested us and trusted us to do it. When we speak, we are not trying to please people, but God, who tests our hearts. 4 (C1)but just as we have been approved by God to be (C2)entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, (C3)not as pleasing men, but God who (F1)(C4)examines our hearts.4 (C1)but just as we have been approved by God to be (C2)entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, (C3)not as pleasing men, but God who (F1)(C4)examines our hearts.4 Instead, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, not in order to please men but God, who examines our hearts. 4 God was pleased to trust us with his message. We didn't speak to please people, but to please God who knows our motives. 4 Instead, since God has tested us and found us fit to be entrusted with Good News, this is how we speak: not to win favor with people but with God, who tests our hearts.
4 but even as we have been approved of God to have the glad tidings entrusted to us, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who proves our hearts. 4 No, we did it because God is the one who gave us this work. And this was only after he tested us and saw that we could be trusted to do it. So when we speak, we are only trying to please God, not anyone else. He is the one who can see what is in our hearts.4 But as we were allowed of God, that the Gospel should be committed vnto vs, so we speake, not as they that please men, but God, which approoueth our hearts.4 But just as we have been examined by God to be entrusted with his gospel, even so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who searches our hearts. 4 Instead, we always speak as God wants us to, because he has judged us worthy to be entrusted with the Good News. We do not try to please people, but to please God, who tests our motives. 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, thus we speak, not as pleasing people but God, who examines our hearts. 4 but even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak not as pleasing men, but God, the One trying our hearts.4 (C1)But just as we have been approved by God to be (C2)entrusted with the gospel that tells the good news of salvation through faith in Christ, so we speak, (C3)not as if we were trying to please people to gain power and popularity, but to please God who (C4)examines our hearts expecting our best. 4 but even as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the [b]gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God who proveth our hearts. 4 But even as the good news was given to us by the approval of God, so we give it out; not as pleasing men, but God by whom our hearts are tested.4 But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. 4 Rather, because we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, we speak as we do, not trying to please people but God, who tests our motives.[xr] 4 but as approved of Aloha to be intrusted with his gospel, so speaking as not to please men, but Aloha who trieth our hearts.4 but as we had been approved of God to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who searcheth our hearts.4 But as it were alowed of God, to be put in credite with the Gospell: euen so we speake, not as pleasyng men, but God, which tryeth our heartes.4 but even as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God which proveth our hearts. 4 But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. 4 But as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who trieth our hearts.4 But as God tested and approved us before entrusting us with His Good News, so in what we say we are seeking not to please men but to please God, who tests and approves our motives.4 but as we ben preued of God, that the gospel of God schulde be takun to vs, so we speken; not as plesynge to men, but to God that preueth oure hertis.4 but even as we have been approved of God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God who proves our hearts.4 But as we were allowed by God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who trieth our hearts. 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we declare it, not to please people but God, who examines our hearts. 4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.
4 For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts. 4 God has allowed us to be trusted with the Good News. Because of this, we preach it to please God, not man. God tests and proves our hearts. 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. 4 But, even as we have been approved by God, to be entrusted with the glad-message, so, we speak, - not as, unto men, giving pleasure, but unto God - who proveth our hearts.4 But as we were approved by God that the gospel should be committed to us: even so we speak, not as pleasing men but God, who proveth our hearts.4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts.4 but as we were alowed of God that the gospell shuld be comitted vnto vs: even so we speake not as though we entended to please men but God which trieth oure hertes.4 but as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the good news, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who is proving our hearts,4 but as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the good news, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who is proving our hearts,4 but as we are alowed of God, that the Gospell shulde be commytted vnto vs to preache, euen so we speake, not as though we wolde please me, but God, which tryeth oure hertes.4 we preach the gospel just as God thought fit to intrust it with us, not being studious to please men, but God, who approves our sincerity. 4 We were bold and honest. God gave us a job of gathering the lost and bringing back those who strayed away. He told us to brand those who believed with the Holy Ghost. Even then, we weren't trying to be cool in people's eyes. We did this to be right with God and do the job he entrusted us with. 5 For we never used flattering speech, as you know, or had greedy(C1) motives(C2)—God is our witness(C3)— 5 For neither at any time vsed wee flattering wordes, as yee knowe, nor a cloke of couetousnesse, God is witnesse:
5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: 5 (n)For we never came with words of flattery,[b] as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—(o)God is witness.5 For we never came (F1)with flattering speech, as you know, nor with (C1)a pretext (F2)for greed—(C2)God is our witness— 5 You know that we never tried to influence you by saying nice things about you. We were not trying to get your money; we had no selfishness to hide from you. God knows that this is true. 5 For we never came (F1)with flattering speech, as you know, nor with (C1)a pretext for greed--(C2)God is witness--5 For we never came with a flattering word, as you know, nor with (C1)a pretext for greed—(C2)God is witness—5 As you know, we never used words of flattery or any pretext for greed. God is our witness!
5 You also know that we didn't try to flatter anyone. God himself knows that what we did wasn't a cover-up for greed. 5 For, as you know, never did we employ flattering talk, nor did we put on a false front to mask greed — God is witness.
5 For we have not at any time been [among you] with flattering discourse, even as ye know, nor with a pretext for covetousness, God [is] witness;
5 You know that we never tried to influence you by saying nice things about you. We were not trying to get your money. We had no greed to hide from you. God knows that this is true.5 Neither yet did we euer vse flattering wordes, as ye knowe, nor coloured couetousnes, God is recorde.5 And we have never used flattering words, as you know, to conceal greed; God is witness: 5 You know very well that we did not come to you with flattering talk, nor did we use words to cover up greed—God is our witness! 5 For never[a] did we come with a word of flattery, just as you know, nor with a pretext of greediness (God is witness), 5 For neither were we then found with a word of flattery, even as you know, nor with pretense of covetousness (God is witness),5 For as you well know, we never came with words of flattery nor with (C1)a pretext for greed—(C2)God is our witness— 5 For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness; 5 For it is common knowledge among you that we never made use of smooth-sounding false words, and God is witness that at no time were we secretly desiring profit for ourselves,5 For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness), 5 As you know, we did not come with words of flattery or with a scheme to make money.
