He was not truehearted to God as his great-grandfather David had been. But despite that, out of respect for David, his God graciously gave him a lamp, a son to follow him and keep Jerusalem secure. For David had lived an exemplary life before God all his days, not going off on his own in willful defiance of God's clear directions (except for that time with Uriah the Hittite). But war continued between Abijah and Jeroboam the whole time.

3 Abijam walked in all the sins his father before him had committed,(C1) and he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God as his ancestor David had been.(C2) 3 He walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.
3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father. 3 And he walked in all the sins that his father did before him, and (b)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father. 3 He did all the same sins his father before him had done. Abijam was not faithful to the Lord his God as David, his great-grandfather, had been. 3 He followed all the sinful practices of his father before him. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had been. 3 He walked in all the sins of idol worship that his father Rehoboam committed before him; and (C1)his heart was not entirely devoted to the LORD his God, like the heart of his father (forefather) David.3 He walked in all the sins of his father which he had committed before him; and (C1)his heart was not (F1)wholly devoted to the LORD his God, like the heart of his father David.3 And hee walked in all the sinnes of his father, which hee had done before him: and his heart was not perfit with the Lord his God as the heart of Dauid his father.3 And he walked in all the sins of his father which he had committed before him; and (C1)his heart was not (F1)wholly devoted to Yahweh his God, like the heart of his father David.
3 Abijam did not truly obey the Lord his God as his ancestor David had done. Instead, he was sinful just like his father Rehoboam. 3 He committed all the sins his father had committed before him; he was not wholehearted with Adonai his God, as David his forefather had been.
3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father.
3 He did all the same sins that his father before him had done. Abijah was not faithful to the Lord his God. In this way he was not like his grandfather, David.3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had committed before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, like the heart of David his father. 3 He committed the same sins as his father and was not completely loyal to the Lord his God, as his great-grandfather David had been. 3 He walked in all the sins of his father that he had done before him, and his heart was not fully with Yahweh his God as the heart of David his father. 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, those that he did before him, and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as was the heart of his father David.3 and he walked in all the synnes of his father, which he had done before him, and his hert was not perfecte with the LORDE his God, as was the hert of Dauid his father. 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father. 3 And he did the same sins which his father had done before him: his heart was not completely true to the Lord his God, like the heart of David his father.3 And he walked in all the sinnes of his father which he had done before him, and his heart was not perfect with the Lorde his God, as the heart of Dauid his father.3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not whole with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.3 And he walked in all the sinnes of his father, which hee had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as the heart of Dauid his father. 3 And he walked in the sins of his father which he wrought in his presence, and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father. 3 Abijam walked in all the sins that his father before him had committed, and his heart was not as fully devoted to the LORD his God as the heart of David his forefather had been.3 And he yede in alle the synnes of his fadir, which he dide bifor hym; and his herte was not perfit with his Lord God, as the herte of Dauid, his fadir, `was perfit.3 and he walketh in all the sins of his father, that he did before him, and his heart hath not been perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father;3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father.3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.3 He walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father. 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.
3 He committed the same sins as his father before him, and he was not faithful to the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had been. 3 And he walked in all the sins which his father had done before him. He was not faithful to the Lord with all his heart, like the heart of his father David. 3 He committed all the sins that his father did before him; his heart was not true to the Lord his God, like the heart of his father David. 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father which he had done before him, - and his heart was not blameless with Yahweh his God, like the heart of David his father.3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father.3 And he walked in all the sins which his father did before him; and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.3 and he walks in all the sins of his father that he did before him, and his heart has not been perfect with his God YHWH, as the heart of his father David;3 He walked in all the sins of his father which he had committed before him; and (C1)his heart was not (F1)wholly devoted to the LORD his God, like the heart of his father David.4 But for the sake of David, the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up his son after him and by preserving Jerusalem.(C1) 4 Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Yerushalayim, to set up his son after him, and to establish Yerushalayim;
4 Nevertheless for David's sake did the Lord his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem: 4 Nevertheless, for David's sake the Lord his God gave him (c)a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem, 4 Because the Lord loved David, the Lord gave him a kingdom in Jerusalem and allowed him to have a son to be king after him. The Lord also kept Jerusalem safe. 4 Nevertheless for David's sake the Lord his God maintained his dynasty in Jerusalem by giving him a son to succeed him and by protecting Jerusalem. 4 Nevertheless, for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a (C1)lamp (descendant on the throne) in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him and establishing Jerusalem,4 But for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a (C1)lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem,4 But for Dauids sake did the Lorde his God giue him a light in Ierusalem, and set vp his sonne after him, and established Ierusalem,4 But for David's sake Yahweh his God gave him a (C1)lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem;4-5 David had always obeyed the Lord's commands by doing right, except in the case of Uriah.[a] And since Abijam was David's great-grandson, the Lord kept Jerusalem safe and let Abijam have a son who would be the next king. 4 Nevertheless, for David's sake Adonai his God gave him a lamp burning in Yerushalayim by establishing his son after him and making Yerushalayim secure.
4 But for David's sake Jehovah his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem; 4 But for David's sake, the Lord gave Abijah a kingdom in Jerusalem and allowed him to have a son. He also kept Jerusalem safe.4 Nevertheless for Davids sake did the LORD God give him an heir in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him and to establish him in Jerusalem; 4 (b)But for David's sake the Lord his God gave Abijah a son to rule after him in Jerusalem and to keep Jerusalem secure. 4 For the sake of David, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, by establishing his son after him and by causing Jerusalem to exist; 4 But for David's sake Jehovah his God gave to him a lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem.4 For because of Dauids sake dyd the LORDE his God geue him a lanterne at Ierusalem, so yt he raysed his sonne after him, & manteyned him at Ierusalem, 4 Nevertheless for David's sake did Jehovah his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem; 4 But because of David, the Lord gave him a light in Jerusalem, making his sons king after him, so that Jerusalem might be safe;4 Neuerthelesse, for Dauids sake did the Lorde his God geue him a lyght in Hierusalem, that he set vp his sonne after him, and stablished Hierusalem:4 Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem;4 Neuerthelesse, for Dauids sake did the Lord his God giue him a lampe in Ierusalem, to set vp his sonne after him, and to establish Ierusalem: 4 Howbeit for Davids sake the Lord gave him a remnant, that he might establish his children after him, and might establish Jerusalem. 4 Nevertheless for David’s sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem: 4 Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and to make Jerusalem strong.4 But for Dauid his Lord God yaf to hym a lanterne in Jerusalem, that he schulde reise his sone after hym, and that he schulde stonde in Jerusalem;4 but for David's sake hath Jehovah his God given to him a lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem,4 Nevertheless for David's sake Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem;4 Nevertheless, for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:4 Nevertheless for David's sake did Yahweh his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem; 4 Nevertheless for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, by setting up his son after him and by establishing Jerusalem; 4 But for David's sake, the Lord his God allowed his descendants to continue ruling, shining like a lamp, and he gave Abijam a son to rule after him in Jerusalem. 4 But the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem because of David. He gave him a son to rule after him and to keep Jerusalem strong. 4 Nevertheless for David's sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem; 4 But, for the sake of David, did Yahweh his God give him a lamp, in Jerusalem, - by raising up a son of his after him, and by suffering Jerusalem to stand;4 But for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:4 Nevertheless for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem;4 but for David's sake his God YHWH has given to him a lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem,4 But for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a (C1)lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem;5 For David did what was right in the Lord’s sight, and he did not turn aside from anything he had commanded him all the days of his life,(C1) except in the matter of Uriah(C2) the Hethite.
5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and didn't turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except only in the matter of Uriyah the Hittite.5 Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 because (d)David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, (e)except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 David always did what the Lord said was right and obeyed his commands all his life, except the one time when David sinned against Uriah the Hittite. 5 He did this because David had done what he approved and had not disregarded any of his commandments his entire lifetime, except for the incident involving Uriah the Hittite. 5 (C1)because David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, (C2)except in the matter of the betrayal of Uriah the Hittite.5 (C1)because David did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and did not deviate from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, (C2)except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.5 Because Dauid did that which was right in the sight of the Lorde, and turned from nothing that he commanded him, all the dayes of his life, saue onely in the matter of Vriah the Hittite.5 (C1)because David did what was right in the sight of Yahweh, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, (C2)except in the case of Uriah the Hittite. 5 For David had done what was right from Adonai's perspective; he had not turned away from anything he had ordered him to do, as long as he lived, except in the matter of Uriyah the Hitti.
5 because David did that which was right in the sight of Jehovah, and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Urijah the Hittite. 5 David had always done what the Lord said was right. He had always obeyed his commands. The only time David did not obey the Lord was when he sinned against Uriah the Hittite.5 Because David did that which was right in the sight of the LORD his God and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 (c)The Lord did this because David had done what pleased him and had never disobeyed any of his commands, except in the case of Uriah the Hittite. 5 because David did right in the eyes of Yahweh and he didn't turn aside from all that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 For David did that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah, and did not turn aside from all that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 because Dauid dyd the thinge yt was righte in ye sighte of the LORDE, and departed not from all that he commaunded him as longe as he lyued (sauynge in the matter with Vrias ye Hethite). 5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 Because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and never in all his life went against his orders, but only in the question of Uriah the Hittite.5 Because Dauid did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and turned from nothing that he commaunded him all the dayes of his lyfe, saue onely in the matter of Urias the Hethite.5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that He commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 Because Dauid did that which was right in the eies of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the daies of his life, saue onely in the matter of Uriiah the Hittite. 5 Forasmuch as David did that which was right in the sight of the Lord: he turned not from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life. 5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and did not turn aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 for Dauid hadde do riytfulnesse in the iyen of the Lord, and hadde not bowid fro alle thingis whiche the Lord hadde comaundid to him, in alle the daies of his lijf, outakun the word of Urie Ethei.5 in that David did that which [is] right in the eyes of Jehovah, and turned not aside from all that He commanded him all days of his life -- only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite;5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 Because David did [that which was] right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any [thing] that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and didn't turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 For David had done what was pleasing in the Lord's sight and had obeyed the Lord's commands throughout his life, except in the affair concerning Uriah the Hittite. 5 Because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from anything the Lord told him to do all the days of his life, except in what happened with Uriah the Hittite. 5 because David did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 5 because David did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, - and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him, all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.5 Because David had done that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from any thing that he commanded him, all the days of his life, except the matter of Urias, the Hethite.5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uri'ah the Hittite.5 in that David did that which [is] right in the eyes of YHWH, and did not turn aside from all that He commanded him all [the] days of his life—except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite;5 (C1)because David did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, (C2)except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.
6 There had been war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of Rehoboam’s life.(C1) 6 Now there was war between Rechav`am and Yarov`am all the days of his life.
6 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life. 6 (f)Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
6 There was war between Abijam and Jeroboam during Abijam's lifetime. 6 Rehoboam and Jeroboam were continually at war with each other throughout Abijah's lifetime. 6 (C1)There was war between Rehoboam Abijam's father and Jeroboam all the days of Rehoboam's life.
6 (C1)And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.6 And there was warre betweene Rehoboam and Ieroboam as long as he liued.6 (C1)Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.6-7 The war that had broken out between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continued during the time that Abijam was king.Everything else Abijam did while he was king is written in The History of the Kings of Judah.
6 There was war between Rechav‘am and Yarov‘am as long as he lived.
