He took them from the surrounding pagan nations of which God had clearly warned Israel, "You must not marry them; they'll seduce you into infatuations with their gods." Solomon fell in love with them anyway, refusing to give them up. He had seven hundred royal wives and three hundred concubines—a thousand women in all! And they did seduce him away from God. As Solomon grew older, his wives beguiled him with their alien gods and he became unfaithful—he didn't stay true to his God as his father David had done. Solomon took up with Ashtoreth, the whore goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the horrible god of the Ammonites.
Solomon Turns from God
1 Now (C1)King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women,2 from the nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods.”(C1) To these women Solomon was deeply attached(F1) in love. 2 of the nations concerning which the LORD said to the children of Yisra'el, You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Shlomo joined to these in love.
2 Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 2 from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, (b)"You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. 2 The Lord had told the Israelites, "You must not marry people of other nations. If you do, they will cause you to follow their gods." But Solomon fell in love with these women. 2 They came from nations about which the Lord had warned the Israelites, "You must not establish friendly relations with them! If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods." But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.2 from the very nations of whom the LORD said to the Israelites, "(C1)You shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate with you, for the result will be that they will turn away your hearts to follow their gods." Yet Solomon clung to these in love. (VR1)2 from the nations of which the LORD had said to the sons of Israel, "(C1)You shall not (F1)associate with them, nor shall they (F1)associate with you; they will certainly turn your heart away (F2)to follow their gods." Solomon clung to these in love.2 Of the nations, whereof the Lord had sayd vnto the children of Israel, Goe not ye in to them, nor let them come in to you: for surely they will turne your hearts after their gods, to them, I say, did Salomon ioyne in loue.2 from the nations concerning which Yahweh had said to the sons of Israel, "(C1)You shall not (F1)go along with them, nor shall they (F1)go along with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. 2 nations about which Adonai had said to the people of Isra'el, "You are not to go among them or they among you, because they will turn your hearts away toward their gods." But Shlomo was deeply attached to them by his love.
2 of the nations of which Jehovah had said to the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in to you; they would certainly turn away your heart after their gods: to these Solomon was attached in love. 2 In the past the Lord had said to the Israelites, "You must not marry people from other nations. If you do, they will cause you to follow their gods." But Solomon fell in love with these women.2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the children of Israel, You shall not mix with them, neither shall they mix with you, lest they turn away your heart after their gods; Solomon clung to these in love. 2 (b)He married them even though the Lord had commanded the Israelites not to intermarry with these people, because they would cause the Israelites to give their loyalty to other gods. 2 from the nations which Yahweh had said to the Israelites,[a] "You shall not marry them,[b] and they shall not marry you.[c] They will certainly turn your heart after other gods." But Solomon clung to them to love. 2 of the nations which Jehovah said to the sons of Israel, You shall not go in to them, and they shall not go in to you; they shall turn aside your heart after their gods; Solomon clung to these in love.2 euen of those nacions, that the LORDE spake of vnto the children of Israel: Go not ye vnto them, and let not them come vnto you: they shal surely bowe youre hertes after their goddes: Vnto these dyd Salomon enclyne with affeccion. 2 of the nations concerning which Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 2 The nations of which the Lord had said to the children of Israel, You are not to take wives from them and they are not to take wives from you; or they will certainly make you go after their gods: to these Solomon was united in love.2 Wher as yet concerning these nations, the Lorde sayd vnto the children of Israel: Go not ye into them, nor let them come into, els will they turne your heartes after their gods: Neuerthelesse, Solomon claue vnto them in loue.2 of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel: 'Ye shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods'; Solomon did cleave unto these in love.2 Of the nations concerning which the Lord said vnto the children of Israel, Yee shall not goe in to them, neither shall they come in vnto you, for surely they will turne away your heart after their gods: Solomon claue vnto these in loue. 2 of the nations concerning whom the Lord forbade the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall not go in to them, and they shall not come in to you, lest they turn away your hearts after their idols: Solomon clave to these in love. 2 of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 2 These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon clung to these women in love.2 of the folkis of whiche the Lord seide to the sones of Israel, Ye schulen not entre to tho folkis, nether ony of hem schulen entre to you; for most certeynli thei schulen turne awei youre hertis, that ye sue the goddis of hem. Therfor kyng Salomon was couplid to these wymmen, bi moost brennyng loue.2 of the nations of which Jehovah said unto the sons of Israel, `Ye do not go in to them, and they do not go in to you; surely they turn aside your heart after their gods;' to them hath Solomon cleaved for love.2 of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the sons of Israel, You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods. Solomon cleaved to these [women] in love.2 Of the nations [concerning] which the LORD said to the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in to you: [for] surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon cleaved to these in love.2 of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the children of Israel, You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon joined to these in love. 2 from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, "You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. 2 The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, "You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods." Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. 2 They were from the nations about which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, "Do not take wives from them. And do not have them take wives from you. For they will be sure to turn your heart away to follow their gods." But Solomon held on to these women in love. 2 from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the Israelites, "You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you; for they will surely incline your heart to follow their gods"; Solomon clung to these in love. 2 out of the nations concerning whom Yahweh had said unto the sons of Israel - Ye shall not go in unto them, and, they, shall not come in unto you, surely they will turn aside your heart after their gods. Unto these, did Solomon cleave in love.2 Of the nations concerning which the Lord said to the children of Israel: You shall not go in unto them, neither shall any of them come into yours: for they will most certainly turn away your hearts to follow their gods. And to these was Solomon joined with a most ardent love.2 from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the people of Israel, "You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods"; Solomon clung to these in love.2 of the nations of which YHWH said to the sons of Israel, "You do not go in to them, and they do not go in to you; surely they turn aside your heart after their gods"; Solomon has cleaved to them for love.2 from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the sons of Israel, "(C1)You shall not (F1)associate with them, nor shall they (F1)associate with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods." Solomon held fast to these in love.3 He had seven hundred wives who were princesses and three hundred who were concubines,(C1) and they turned his heart away.(C2)
3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had seven hundred wives who were from royal families and three hundred slave women who gave birth to his children. His wives caused him to turn away from God.
3 He had 700 royal wives and 300 concubines; his wives had a powerful influence over him. 3 (C1)He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred (F1)concubines, and his wives turned his heart away from God.3 (C1)He had seven hundred wives, who were (F1)princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away.3 And he had seuen hundreth wiues, that were princesses, and three hundreth concubines, and his wiues turned away his heart.3 (C1)And he had 700 wives—princesses—and 300 concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.3-4 Seven hundred of his wives were daughters of kings, but he also married three hundred other women.[a]
As Solomon got older, some of his wives led him to worship their gods. He wasn't like his father David, who had worshiped only the Lord God. 3 He had 700 wives, all princesses, and 300 concubines; and his wives turned his heart away.
3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had 700 wives who were the daughters of leaders from other nations. He also had 300 slave women who were like wives to him. His wives caused him to turn away from God.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 Solomon married seven hundred princesses and also had three hundred concubines. They made him turn away from God, 3 He had seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.3 And he had seuen hundreth wemen to wyues, and thre hundreth concubynes, and his wyues turned his hert asyde. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had seven hundred wives, daughters of kings, and three hundred other wives; and through his wives his heart was turned away.3 And he had seuen hundred queenes, and three hundred concubines: and his wyues turned away his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.3 And he had seuen hundred wiues, Princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wiues turned away his heart. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines—and his wives turned his heart away.3 And wyues as queenys weren seuene hundrid to hym, and thre hundrid secundarie wyues; and the wymmen turneden awey his herte.3 And he hath women, princesses, seven hundred, and concubines three hundred; and his wives turn aside his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord. 3 He had 700 wives, kings' daughters, and 300 women who acted as his wives. And his wives turned his heart away. 3 Among his wives were seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 3 So it came to pass that he had seven hundred wives who were princesses, and three hundred concubines, - and, his wives, turned aside, his heart.3 And he had seven hundred wives as queens, and three hundred concubines: and the women turned away his heart.3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.3 And he has seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turn aside his heart.3 (C1)He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
4 When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been.(C1) 4 For it happened, when Shlomo was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and (c)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, (d)as was the heart of David his father. 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives caused him to follow other gods. He did not follow the Lord completely as his father David had done. 4 When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been. 4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and (C1)his heart was not completely devoted to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away (F1)to follow other gods; and (C1)his heart was not (F2)wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of his father David had been.4 For when Salomon was olde, his wiues turned his heart after other gods, so that his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of Dauid his father.4 Now it happened at the time that Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and (C1)his heart was not (F1)wholly devoted to Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 4 For when Shlomo became old, his wives turned his heart away toward other gods; so that he was not wholehearted with Adonai his God, as David his father had been.
4 And it came to pass when Solomon was old, [that] his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father. 4 When Solomon was old, his wives caused him to follow other gods, so he did not follow the Lord completely as his father David did.4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 and by the time he was old they had led him into the worship of foreign gods. He was not faithful to the Lord his God, as his father David had been.
Solomon's Apostasy
4 It happened at the time of Solomon's old age that his wives guided his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully with Yahweh his God as the heart of David his father had been. 4 And it happened, at the time Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, like the heart of his father David.4 And whan he was now olde, his wyues bowed his hert after straunge goddes, so that his hert was not whole with the LORDE his God, as was the hert of Dauid his father. 4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 For it came about that when Solomon was old, his heart was turned away to other gods by his wives; and his heart was no longer true to the Lord his God as the heart of his father David had been.4 For it came to passe when Solomon was olde, his wyues turned his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of Dauid his father.4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not whole with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.4 For it came to passe when Solomon was old, that his wiues turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of Dauid his father. 4 And it came to pass in the time of the old age of Solomon, that his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 For when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.4 And whanne he was thanne eld, his herte was bischrewid bi wymmen, that he suede alien goddis; and his herte was not perfit with his Lord God, as the herte of Dauid, his fadir, `was perfit.4 And it cometh to pass, at the time of the old age of Solomon, his wives have turned aside his heart after other gods, and his heart hath not been perfect with Jehovah his God, like the heart of David his father.4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart wasn't perfect with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father.4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, [that] his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as [was] the heart of David his father.4 For it happened, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father. 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.
4 In Solomon's old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God, as his father, David, had been. 4 When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods. His whole heart was not faithful to the Lord his God, as the heart of his father David had been. 4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 4 Yea it came to pass, in the old age of Solomon, that, his wives, turned aside his heart after other gods, - his heart therefore was not sound with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father.4 And when he was now old, his heart was turned away by women to follow strange gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father.4 For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.4 And it comes to pass, at the time of Solomon's old age, his wives have turned aside his heart after other gods, and his heart has not been perfect with his God YHWH, like the heart of his father David.4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and (C1)his heart was not (F1)wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.5 Solomon followed Ashtoreth,(C1) the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom,(C2) the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites.(C3) 5 For Shlomo went after `Ashoret the goddess of the Tzidonim, and after Milkom the abomination of the `Ammonim.
