1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.1 Jeroboam son of Nebat was still in Egypt where he had run away from Solomon. When he heard about Solomon's death, he returned to his city, Zeredah, in the hills of Ephraim.[a]

Jeroboam had been in Egypt, where he had taken asylum from King Solomon; when he got the report of Solomon's death he had come back.

King Rehoboam Acts Foolishly

1 (C1)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to (C2)Shechem to make him king.2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about it, he stayed in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon’s presence.(C1) Jeroboam stayed in Egypt.(F1) 2 It happened, when Yarov`am the son of Nevat heard of it (for he was yet in Mitzrayim, where he had fled from the presence of king Shlomo, and Yarov`am lived in Mitzrayim,

2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) 2 And as soon as (c)Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for (d)he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from[a] Egypt. 2 Jeroboam son of Nebat was still in Egypt, where he had gone to escape from Solomon. When Jeroboam heard about Rehoboam being made king, he was living in Egypt. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news, he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon and had been living ever since. 2 Now when (C1)Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about it, he was living in Egypt (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon).2 Now (C1)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about this, (F1)he was living in Egypt (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon).2 And whe Ieroboam ye sonne of Nebat heard of it (who was yet in Egypt, whither Ieroboam had fled from king Salomon, & dwelt in Egypt)2 And it happened, (C1)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (F1)he was living in Egypt (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon).

2 Jeroboam son of Nebat heard what was happening, and he stayed in Egypt,[a] where he had gone to hide from Solomon. 2 When Yarov‘am the son of N'vat heard of it — for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from Shlomo; so Yarov‘am was living in Egypt;

When Jeroboam heard the news, he returned from Egypt. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from[a] Egypt. 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it - he being yet in Egypt, whither he had fled from the face of Solomon the king, that Jeroboam returned from Egypt;2 But Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was yet in Egypt, a fugitive from the face of king Solomon, hearing of his death, returned out of Egypt.2 And when Jerobo'am the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, whither he had fled from King Solomon), then Jerobo'am returned from Egypt.2 And it comes to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's hearing (and he [is] yet in Egypt where he has fled from the presence of Solomon the king, and Jeroboam dwells in Egypt),2 Now (C1)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (F1)he was living in Egypt (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon).3 But they summoned him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam: 3 and they sent and called him), that Yarov`am and all the assembly of Yisra'el came, and spoke to Rechav`am, saying,

And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 3 And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, 3 After the people sent for him, he and the people went to Rehoboam and said to him, 3 They sent for him, and Jeroboam and the whole Israelite assembly came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 3 So they sent word and called for him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,3 Then they sent word and summoned him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,3 Then they sent and called him: and Ieroboam and all the Congregation of Israel came, and spake vnto Rehoboam, saying,3 Then they sent and called for him. And Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 3 But the people from the northern tribes of Israel sent for him. Then together they went to Rehoboam and said, 3 but they sent and summoned him — Yarov‘am and the whole community of Isra'el came and said to Rechav‘am,

And Jeroboam and all the people of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 3 The people of the northern tribes sent for him, and then they all went together to Rehoboam and said to him, 3 So they sent and summoned him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came. Then they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 3 that they sent and called for him; and they came, Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,3 And they sent for him, and called him. And Ieroboam with all the congregacion of Israel came and spake to Roboam, and sayde: 3 and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 3 And all the men of Israel came to Rehoboam and said,3 So they sent, and called him: and Ieroboam and all the congregation of Is-Israel came, & spake vnto Rehoboam, saying:3 and they sent and called him--that Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke unto Rehoboam, saying:3 That they sent, and called him: and Ieroboam and all the Congregation of Israel came, and spake vnto Rehoboam, saying; 3 And the people spoke to king Roboam, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy; 3 and they sent and called him;) that Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel came to Rehoboam and said,3 and thei senten, and clepiden hym. Therfor Jeroboam cam, and al the multitude of Israel, and thei spaken to Roboam,3 that they send and call for him; and they come -- Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel -- and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,3 and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,3 That they sent and called him. Then Jeroboam and all the people of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, 3 And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, 3 yes they sent, and called him, and Jeroboam and all the convocation of Israel came, - and spake unto Rehoboam, saying:3 And they sent and called him: and Jeroboam came, and all the multitude of Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:3 And they sent and called him; and Jerobo'am and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehobo'am,3 that they send and call for him; and they come—Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel—and speak to Rehoboam, saying,3-4 Rehoboam assembled Jeroboam and all the people. They said to Rehoboam, "Your father made life hard for us—worked our fingers to the bone. Give us a break; lighten up on us and we'll willingly serve you."3 Then they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,4 “Your father made our yoke harsh.(C1) You, therefore, lighten your father’s harsh service and the heavy yoke he put on us,(C2) and we will serve you.”

4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.

4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 4 (e)"Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you." 4 "Your father forced us to work very hard. Now, make it easier for us, and don't make us work as hard as he did. Then we will serve you." 4 "Your father made us work too hard. Now if you lighten the demands he made and don't make us work as hard, we will serve you." 4 "(C1)Your father made our yoke (burden) heavy; so now lighten the hard labor and the heavy yoke your father imposed on us, and we will serve you."4 "(C1)Your father made our yoke hard; but now, lighten the hard labor imposed by your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you."4 Thy father made our yoke grieuous: now therefore make thou the grieuous seruitude of thy father, and his sore yoke which he put vpon vs, lighter, and we will serue thee.4 "(C1)Your father made our yoke harsh; but you, now, lighten the harsh service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you." 4 "Your father Solomon forced us to work very hard. But if you make our work easier, we will serve you and do whatever you ask." 4 "Your father laid a harsh yoke on us. But if you will lighten the harsh service we had to render your father and ease his heavy yoke that he put on us, we will serve you."

4 Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten thou the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee. 4 "Your father forced us to work very hard. Now, make it easier for us. Stop the heavy work that your father forced us to do and we will serve you."4 Your father made our yoke harsh; now therefore lighten some of the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, and we will serve you. 4 "Your father Solomon treated us harshly and placed heavy burdens on us. If you make these burdens lighter and make life easier for us, we will be your loyal subjects." 4 "Your father made our yoke heavy; now lighten the hard labor of your father and the heavy yoke which he placed on us, and we will serve you." 4 Your father made our yoke hard; and now you should lighten some of the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve you.4 Thy father made oure yock to harde: therfore make thou now the harde bondage and the sore yock lighter, and we wyll submytte oure selues vnto the. 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 4 Your father put a hard yoke on us: if you will make the conditions under which your father kept us down less cruel, and the weight of the yoke he put on us less hard, then we will be your servants.4 Thy father made our yocke greeuous, nowe therfore make thou the greenous seruice of thy father and his sore yocke whiche he put vpon vs, lighter, and we will serue thee.4 'Thy father made our yoke grievous; now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.'4 Thy father made our yoke grieuous: now therefore, make thou the grieuous seruice of thy father, and his heauy yoke which he put vpon vs, lighter, and we will serue thee. 4 but do thou now lighten somewhat of the hard service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke which he put upon us, and we will serve thee. 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you should lighten the burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”4 and seiden, Thi fadir puttide hardeste yok on vs, therfor abate thou a litil now of the hardest comaundement of thi fadir, and of the greuousiste yok which he puttide on vs, and we schulen serue to thee.4 `Thy father made hard our yoke, and thou, now, make light [some] of the hard service of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore you make the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you. 4 "Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you." 4 "Your father was a hard master," they said. "Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy taxes that your father imposed on us. Then we will be your loyal subjects." 4 "Your father made our load heavy. Take away some of the hard work and heavy load your father put on us, and we will serve you." 4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke that he placed on us, and we will serve you." 4 Thy father, made our yoke, grievous, - now, therefore do, thou, lighten the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, that we may serve thee.4 Thy father laid a grievous yoke upon us: now, therefore, do thou take off a little of the grievous service of thy father, and of his most heavy yoke, which he put upon us, and we will serve thee.4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you."4 "Your father hardened our yoke, and you, now, lighten [some] of the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke that he put on us, and we serve you."4 "(C1)Your father made our yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you."

5 Rehoboam replied, “Go away for three days and then return to me.” So the people left. 5 He said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. The people departed.

5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 5 He said to them, (f)"Go away for three days, then come again to me." So the people went away.

5 Rehoboam answered, "Go away for three days, and then come back to me." So the people left. 5 He said to them, "Go away for three days, then return to me." So the people went away.5 Rehoboam replied to them, "(C1)Leave for three days, then come back to me for my decision." So the people left.

5 Then he said to them, "(C1)Depart (F1)for three days, then return to me." So the people departed.

5 And he said vnto them, Depart yet for three dayes, then come againe to me. And the people departed.5 Then he said to them, "(C1)Go (F1)for three days, then return to me." So the people went away.

5 "Give me three days to think about it," Rehoboam replied, "then come back for my answer." So the people left. 5 He said to them, "Leave me alone for three days, then come back to me." So the people left.

5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

5 Rehoboam answered, "Come back to me in three days, and I will answer you." So the people left.5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. So all the people departed.

5 "Come back in three days and I will give you my answer," he replied. So they left. 5 He said, "Go up for three days and then return to me"; so the people went away.5 And he said to them, Go; yet in three days come back to me. And the people went.5 He sayde vnto them: Go youre waye vnto the thirde daye, and then come to me agayne. And the people wete their waye. 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.5 And he said to them, Go away for three days and then come back to me again. So the people went away.5 And he sayde vnto them: Depart yet for the space of three dayes, and then come againe to me. And the people departed.5 And he said unto them: 'Depart yet for three days, then come again to me.' And the people departed.5 And hee said vnto them, Depart yet for three daies, then come againe to me. And the people departed. 5 And he said to them, Depart for three days, and return to me. And they departed. 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then return to me.” So the people departed.5 Which Roboam seide to hem, Go ye `til to the thridde dai, and turne ye ayen to me.5 And he saith unto them, `Go -- yet three days, and come back unto me;' and the people go.5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.5 And he said to them, Depart yet [for] three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.5 He said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. The people departed. 5 So he said to them, "Depart for three days, then come back to me." And the people departed.

5 Rehoboam replied, "Give me three days to think this over. Then come back for my answer." So the people went away. 5 Rehoboam said to them, "Leave for three days. Then return to me." So the people left. 5 He said to them, "Go away for three days, then come again to me." So the people went away.5 And he said unto them - Depart ye for yet three days, and then come again unto me. And the people departed.5 And he said to them: Go till the third day, and come to me again. And when the people was gone,5 He said to them, "Depart for three days, then come again to me." So the people went away.5 And he says to them, "Yet go [for] three days, and come back to me"; and the people go.

5 "Give me three days to think it over, then come back," Rehoboam said.5 Then he said to them, "(C1)Depart (F1)for three days, then return to me." So the people departed.

6 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders(C1) who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, “How do you advise me to respond to this people?”

6 King Rechav`am took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Shlomo his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give you me to return answer to this people?

6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"

6 King Rehoboam asked the elders who had advised Solomon during his lifetime, "How do you think I should answer these people?"

6 King Rehoboam consulted with the older advisers who had served his father Solomon when he had been alive. He asked them, "How do you advise me to answer these people?"

6 King Rehoboam (C1)consulted with the elders who had served and advised his father Solomon while he was still alive and said, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"

6 And King Rehoboam (C1)consulted with the elders who had (F1)served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"6 And King Rehoboam tooke counsell with the olde men that had stande before Salomon his father, while he yet liued, and sayde, What counsell giue ye, that I may make an answere to this people?

6 Then King Rehoboam (C1)took counsel with the elders who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to respond to this people?"

6 Rehoboam went to some leaders who had been his father's senior officials, and he asked them, "What should I tell these people?"

6 King Rechav‘am consulted the older men who had been in attendance on Shlomo his father during his lifetime and asked, "What advice would you give me as to how to answer these people?"

6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?

6 There were some older men who had helped Solomon make decisions when he was alive. So King Rehoboam asked these men what he should do. He said, "How do you think I should answer the people?"6 And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who had stood before his father while he was still alive, and said to them, How do you advise that I may answer the people?

6 King Rehoboam consulted the older men who had served as his father Solomon's advisers. "What answer do you advise me to give these people?" he asked.

Rehoboam Seeks Counsel to Respond

6 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who had been serving[a] before Solomon his father when he was alive, saying, "How are you advising me to answer this people?"[b] 6 And King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had been standing before the face of his father Solomon while he was alive, saying, How do you advise in order to answer this people?6 And Roboam the kynge helde a councell with the Elders that stode before Salomo his father whyle he lyued, & he sayde: What is youre councell, that we maye geue this people an answere?

6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? 6 Then King Rehoboam took the opinion of the old men who had been with Solomon his father when he was living, and said, In your opinion, what answer am I to give to this people?6 And king Rehoboam toke counsel with the olde men that stoode before Solomon his father, while he yet lyued, and sayd: What counsel geue ye, that I may haue matter to aunswere this people?6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying: 'What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?'6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men that stood before Solomon his father, while he yet liued, and said, How doe you aduise, that I may answere this people? 6 And the king referred the matter to the elders, who stood before Solomon his father while he was yet living, saying, How do ye advise that I should answer this people? 6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? 6 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you advise me to respond to these people?” he asked.6 And whanne the puple hadde go, kyng Roboam took counsel with the eldere men, that stoden bifor Salomon, his fadir, while he lyuyde yit; and Roboam seide, What counsel yyue ye to me, that Y answere to the puple?6 And king Rehoboam consulteth with the elders who have been standing in the presence of Solomon his father, in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?6 King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give you me to return answer to this people? 6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, and he said, "How do you advise me to answer these people?"

6 Then King Rehoboam discussed the matter with the older men who had counseled his father, Solomon. "What is your advice?" he asked. "How should I answer these people?"

6 King Rehoboam spoke with the leaders who had worked for his father Solomon while he was still alive. He asked them, "What answer do you think I should give to these people?"

6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the older men who had attended his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?" 6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who used to stand before Solomon his father, while he yet lived, saying, - How do, ye, advise, that I answer this people?6 King Roboam took counsel with the old men, that stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, and he said: What counsel do you give me, that I may answer this people?6 Then King Rehobo'am took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"6 And King Rehoboam consults with the elderly who have been standing in the presence of his father Solomon, in his being alive, saying, "How are you counseling to answer this people?"

6 King Rehoboam talked it over with the elders who had advised his father when he was alive: "What's your counsel? How do you suggest that I answer the people?"

6 King Rehoboam (C1)consulted with the elders who had (F1)served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answer this people?"

7 They replied, “Today if you will be a servant to this people and serve them, and if you respond to them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.”(C1)

7 They spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.

7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
