¹ It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality^(C1) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated^(F1) among the Gentiles^(C2)—a man is sleeping with his father’s wife.^(C3)

Don't Let Your People Live in Sin

¹ I don't want to believe what I am hearing—that there is sexual sin among you. And it is such a bad kind of sexual sin that even those who have never known God don't allow it. People say that a man there has his father's wife.

Paul Condemns Spiritual Pride

¹ I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don't do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.^[a]

Sin in the Church

¹ Someone has told me about a sex sin among you. It is so bad that even the people who do not know God would not do it. I have been told that one of the men is living with his father's wife as if she were his wife.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

¹ It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father's wife.

¹ we have it from all quarters, that incest is practis'd among you, and such as is not among the Gentiles, that of a man's having his father's wife. ^1-2 I also received a report of scandalous sex within your church family, a kind that wouldn't be tolerated even outside the church: One of your men is sleeping with his stepmother. And you're so above it all that it doesn't even faze you! Shouldn't this break your hearts? Shouldn't it bring you to your knees in tears? Shouldn't this person and his conduct be confronted and dealt with?

Spiritual Pride and Sexual Perverts

¹ And another thing, I've heard there are perverts in your outfit there. There is dirty stuff going on there that even sinners would frown on. Please tell me there isn't a man sleeping with his stepmom! ² And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief^(C1) and remove from your congregation the one who did this? ² And yee are puffed vp, and haue not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed, might bee taken away from among you.

² And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. ² And ^(c)you are arrogant! Ought you ^(d)not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.^2 (F1)You ^(C1)have become ^(F2)arrogant and ^(F1)have not ^(C2)mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be ^(C3)removed from your midst.

² And *ye* are puffed up, and ye have not rather mourned, in order that he that has done this deed might be taken away out of the midst of you. ² And still you are proud of yourselves! You should have been filled with sadness. And the man who committed that sin should be put out of your group.² And ye are puffed vp and haue not rather sorowed, that he which hath done this deede, might be put from among you.² But instead of boasting as you have, rather had you sat down mourning that he who has done this deed has not been removed from among you. ² How, then, can you be proud? On the contrary, you should be filled with sadness, and the man who has done such a thing should be expelled from your fellowship. ² And you are inflated with pride, and should you not rather have mourned, so that the one who has done this deed would be removed from your midst? ² And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that did this deed might be taken from your midst. ² And ^[a]ye are puffed up, and ^[b]did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you. ² And in place of feeling sorrow, you are pleased with yourselves, so that he who has done this thing has not been sent away from among you.² You are puffed up, and didn't rather mourn, that he who had done this deed might be removed from among you. ² And you are being arrogant instead of being filled with grief and seeing to it that the man who did this is removed from among you.[xr] ² And you are inflated; but should you not rather sit in grief that he who hath wrought this work might be put away from you ?² And ye are inflated, and have not rather sitten down in grief, that he who hath done this deed might be separated from you.² And ye swell, and haue not rather sorowed, that he that hath so done this deede myght be put from among you.² And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you. ² You are puffed up, and didn't rather mourn, that he who had done this deed might be removed from among you. ² And are ye puffed up? Have ye not rather mourned, that he who hath done this deed, might be taken from among you?² And you, instead of mourning and removing from among you the man who has done this deed of shame, are filled with self-complacency!² And ye ben bolnyd with pride, and not more hadden weilyng, that he that dide this werk, be takun awei fro the myddil of you.² And you are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you.² And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. ² And you are proud! Shouldn't you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed the one who did this from among you? ² And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. ² You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship. ² Instead of being sorry, you are proud of yourselves. The man who is living like that should be sent away from you. ² And you are arrogant! Should you not rather have mourned, so that he who has done this would have been removed from among you?² And, ye, have become puffed up, and have not rather mourned, in order that he might be removed out of your midst, who, this deed, hath wrought.² And you are puffed up and have not rather mourned: that he might be taken away from among you that hath done this thing.² And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.² And ye swell and have not rather sorowed yt he which hath done this dede myght be put fro amoge you.² and ye are having been puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he may be removed out of the midst of you who did this work,² And you are having been puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he may be removed out of the midst of you who did this work,² And ye are puft vp, and haue not rather sorowed, that he which hath done this dede, mighte be put fro amoge you.² this you have made a matter of levity, instead of being concern'd in discarding him that has done such an action. ² Y'all walk around proud like banty roosters, but you should be bawling your eyes out for letting this happen in your outfit. Some real men should take this fellow and send him down the road. ³ Even though I am absent in the body, I am present in spirit.^(C1) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who has been doing such a thing. ³ For I verily as absent in body, but present in spirit, haue iudged alreadie, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

³ For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

³ For though ^(e)absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing.

³ For I, on my part, though ^(C1)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. ³ I am not there with you in person, but I am with you in spirit. And I have already judged the man who did that sin as if I were really there.

³ For I, though ^(C1)absent from you in body but present in spirit, have already passed judgment on him who has committed this act, as if I were present.

³ For I, on my part, though ^(C1)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.

³ For I, on my part, though ^(C1)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present:³ Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.^3-4 I am with you only in my thoughts. But in the name of our Lord Jesus I have already judged this man, as though I were with you in person. So when you meet together and the power of the Lord Jesus is with you, I will be there too. ³ For I myself, even though I am absent physically, am with you spiritually; and I have already judged the man who has done this as if I were present.

³ For *I*, [as] absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged as present, ³ I cannot be there with you in person, but I am with you in spirit. And I have already judged the man who did this. I judged him the same as I would if I were really there.³ For I verely as absent in bodie, but present in spirit, haue determined already as though I were present, that he that hath thus done this thing,³ For while I am far away from you in body, yet I am near you in spirit, and I have already judged, as though I were present, him who has done this deed.^3-4 And even though I am far away from you in body, still I am there with you in spirit; and as though I were there with you, I have in the name of our Lord Jesus already passed judgment on the man who has done this terrible thing. As you meet together, and I meet with you in my spirit, by the power of our Lord Jesus present with us, ³ For although I^[a] am absent in body but present in spirit, I have already passed judgment on the one who has done this in this way, as if I^[b] were present. ³ For as being absent in body, but being present in spirit, I have already judged the one who has worked out this thing, as if I were present: ³ For I verily, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already as though I were present judged him that hath so wrought this thing, ³ For I myself, being present in spirit though not in body, have come to a decision about him who has done this thing;³ For I most assuredly, as being absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as though I were present, judged him who has done this thing. ³ Even though I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit. I have already passed judgment on the man who did this, as though I were present with you.[xr] ³ But I, while distant from you in body, am near you in spirit, and now judge, as if near you, him who hath done this;³ And I, while distant from you in body but present with you in spirit, have already, as if present, judged him who perpetrateth this deed;³ For I veryly, as absent in body, but present in spirite, haue determined alredie, as though I were present, concernyng hym that hath done this deede.³ For I verily, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as though I were present, judged him that hath so wrought this thing, ³ For I most assuredly, as being absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as though I were present, judged him who has done this thing. ³ For I verily as absent in body, but present in spirit, have already,³ I for my part, present with you in spirit although absent in body, have already, as though I were present, judged him who has so acted.³ And Y absent in bodi, but present in spirit, now haue demyd as present hym that hath thus wrouyt, whanne³ For I truly, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already as though I were present judged him that has so worked this thing,³ For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already as though I were present, [concerning] him that hath so done this deed, ³ For even though I am absent physically, I am present in spirit. And I have already judged the one who did this, just as though I were present. ³ For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed.

³ Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit.^[b] And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man ³ I am far from you. Even if I am not there, my spirit is with you. I have already said that the man is guilty of this sin. I am saying this as if I were there with you.

³ For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present I have already pronounced judgment ³ For, I, indeed, - being absent in the body, but present in the spirit, have already judged, as present, him who, thus, this thing hath perpetrated: - ³ I indeed, absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, him that hath so done,³ For though absent in body I am present in spirit, and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment³ For I verely as absent in body even so present in sprete have determyned all redy (as though I were present) of him that hath done this dede³ for I indeed, as being absent as to the body, and present as to the spirit, have already judged, as being present, him who so wrought this thing:³ for I indeed, as being absent as to the body, and present as to the spirit, have already judged, as being present, him who so worked this thing:³ For I verely as absent in body, but present in sprete, haue determyned allready as though I were present (cocernynge him that hath done this dede)³ as for me, though I am absent in person, yet being present by my authority, with regard to him that has committed this fact, I am come to the same resolution, as if I was present, ^3-5 I'll tell you what I would do. Even though I'm not there in person, consider me right there with you, because I can fully see what's going on. I'm telling you that this is wrong. You must not simply look the other way and hope it goes away on its own. Bring it out in the open and deal with it in the authority of Jesus our Master. Assemble the community—I'll be present in spirit with you and our Master Jesus will be present in power. Hold this man's conduct up to public scrutiny. Let him defend it if he can! But if he can't, then out with him! It will be totally devastating to him, of course, and embarrassing to you. But better devastation and embarrassment than damnation. You want him on his feet and forgiven before the Master on the Day of Judgment.³ I may not be riding with you in person, but I'm still a part of your outfit and in the name of the Lord, I pass judgment on this no-account scoundrel.⁴ When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, ⁴ In the Name of our Lord Iesus Christ, when yee are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Iesus Christ,

⁴ [to deliver,] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (ye and my spirit being gathered together, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ), him that has so wrought this: ⁴ Come together in the name of our Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church.^[c] I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus. ⁴ Call a meeting of the church. I will be with you in spirit. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by His power, ⁴ in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing.^[a] When you are assembled, and my spirit is present with the power of our Lord Jesus, ⁴ In the name of our Lord Jesus, ye being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,⁴ In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus:⁴ in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing. When you are assembled, and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,⁴ in the name of oure Lorde Iesu Christ when ye are gaddered togedder and my sprete with the power of the Lorde Iesus Christ⁴ in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ -- ye being gathered together, also my spirit -- with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,⁴ in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ—you being gathered together, also my spirit—with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,⁴ in ye name of oure LORDE Iesus Christ, wha ye are gathered together with my sprete, and with the power of oure LORDE Iesus Christ,⁴ that is, when you are assembled, and I virtually there, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ , ⁴ Call a meeting between all the cowboys and know I'm there with you in spirit. ⁵ hand that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,^(C1) so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.^(C2)

⁵ To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. ⁵ you are ^(g)to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so ^(h)that his spirit may be saved ⁽ⁱ⁾in the day of the Lord.^[a]5 I have decided ^(F1)to ^(C1)turn such a person over to ^(C2)Satan for the destruction of his ^(F2)body, so that his spirit may be saved on ^(C3)the day of the ^(F3)Lord.

⁵ to deliver him, [I say,] [being] such, to Satan for destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. ⁵ Then turn this man over to Satan. Hopefully, he will be saved when the Lord comes riding back.

^6 (C1)Your boasting over the supposed spirituality of your church is not good indeed, it is vulgar and inappropriate. ^(F1)(C2)Do you not know that just ^(C3)a little leaven ferments the whole batch of dough, just as a little sin corrupts a person or an entire church?
