Speaking in Special Sounds Is Not the Greatest Gift

1 Cultivate social virtue; then desire spiritual gifts, but chiefly that of explaining the prophetical writings. 1-3 Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to proclaim his truth. If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. But when you proclaim his truth in everyday speech, you're letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience his presence with you.

No one understands them; they are speaking secret things through the Spirit. 2 For one who (C1)speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one understands him or catches his meaning, but by the Spirit he speaks (C2)mysteries secret truths, hidden things.2 For one who (C1)speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one (F1)understands, but (F2)in his spirit he speaks (C2)mysteries.2 For one who (C1)speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one (F1)understands, but (F2)in his spirit he speaks (C2)mysteries.2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 2 If you speak languages that others don't know, God will understand what you are saying, though no one else will know what you mean. It's a special ability, but only to you. No one else will know what you are saying. 3 On the other hand, the person who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(F1) encouragement, and consolation. 3 But he that prophesieth, speaketh vnto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for (C1)edification, (F1)(C2)exhortation, and consolation. 3 But those who prophesy are speaking to people to give them strength, encouragement, and comfort. 3 But on the other hand the one who prophesies speaks to people for (C1)edification to promote their spiritual growth and speaks words of (C2)encouragement to uphold and advise them concerning the matters of God and speaks words of consolation to compassionately comfort them.3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for (C1)edification and (C2)exhortation and consolation.3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for (C1)edification and (C2)exhortation and encouragement.3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort. 3 But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better. 3 But someone prophesying is speaking to people, edifying, encouraging and comforting them.
3 But he that prophesies speaks to men [in] edification, and encouragement, and consolation. 3 But those who prophesy are speaking to people. It gives them comfort. 3 On the other hand, those who prophesy speak to other people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 3 But, be that prophesieth, unto men, doth speak - edification, and exhortation, and comfort.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh to men unto edification and exhortation and comfort.3 On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh vnto men to edifyinge to exhortacion and to comforte.3 and he who is prophesying to men doth speak edification, and exhortation, and comfort;3 and he who is prophesying to men speaks edification, and exhortation, and comfort;3 But he that prophecieth, speaketh vnto men to edifienge, & to exhortacion, and to coforte.3 but he that expounds, speaks to the edification, exhortation, and comfort of men. 3 But the fellow who is gifted with speaking God's truth does so to strengthen, encourage, and comfort others. 4 The person who speaks in another tongue builds himself up, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 4 He that speaketh in an vnknowen tongue, edifieth himselfe: but hee that prophesieth, edifieth the Church.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.4 The one who (C1)speaks in a tongue (C2)edifies himself; but the one who (C3)prophesies (C2)edifies the church. 4 The ones who speak in different languages are helping only themselves, but those who prophesy are helping the whole church. 4 One who (C1)speaks in a tongue (C2)edifies himself; but one who (C3)prophesies (C2)edifies the church promotes growth in spiritual wisdom, devotion, holiness, and joy.4 One who (C1)speaks in a tongue (C2)edifies himself; but one who (C3)prophesies (C2)edifies the church.4 One who (C1)speaks in a tongue (C2)edifies himself; but one who (C3)prophesies (C2)edifies the church.4 The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
4 By speaking languages that others don't know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church. 4 A person speaking in a tongue does edify himself, but a person prophesying edifies the congregation.

The man who speaks God's Word gives strength to the church. 4 Those who speak in a tongue build up themselves, but those who prophesy build up the church. 4 He that speaketh with a tongue, buildeth up, himself, whereas, he that prophesieth, buildeth up, an assembly.4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself: but he that prophesieth, edifieth the church.4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.4 He that speaketh with tonges proffiteth him silfe: he that prophesyeth edifieth the congregacion.4 he who is speaking in an [unknown] tongue, himself doth edify, and he who is prophesying, an assembly doth edify;4 he who is speaking in an [unknown] tongue, edifies himself, and he who is prophesying, edifies the Assembly;4 He that speaketh with tunges, edifieth himselfe: but he that prophecieth, edifieth the cogregacion.4 he that speaks in an unknown tongue, edifies himself alone: but he that expounds, edifies the church. 4-5 The one who prays using a private "prayer language" certainly gets a lot out of it, but proclaiming God's truth to the church in its common language brings the whole church into growth and strength. I want all of you to develop intimacies with God in prayer, but please don't stop with that. Go on and proclaim his clear truth to others. It's more important that everyone have access to the knowledge and love of God in language everyone understands than that you go off and cultivate God's presence in a mysterious prayer language—unless, of course, there is someone who can interpret what you are saying for the benefit of all.4 A cowboy speaking in tongues helps themselves, but no one else. But those who hand out God's truth, they are helping everyone.
5 I wish all of you spoke in other tongues,(F1) but even more that you prophesied. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be built up.5 I would that yee all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is hee that prophesieth, then hee that speaketh with tongues, except hee interprete, that the Church may receiue edifying.5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but (f)even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.5 Now I wish that you all (C1)spoke in tongues, but (C2)rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who (C1)speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive (C3)edification.
5 I wish all of you had the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages, but more, I wish you would prophesy. Those who prophesy are greater than those who can only speak in different languages—unless someone is there who can explain what is said so that the whole church can be helped.5 Now I wish that all of you (C1)spoke in unknown tongues, but even (C2)more I wish that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater and more useful than the one who (C1)speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains what he says, so that the church may (F1)be (C3)edified instructed, improved, strengthened.5 Now I wish that you all (C1)spoke in tongues, but (C2)even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who (C1)speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive (C3)edifying.5 But I wish that you all (C1)spoke in tongues, but (C2)even more that you would prophesy. And greater is one who prophesies than one who (C1)speaks in tongues, unless he (F1)translates, so that the church may receive (C3)edification.5 I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 5 I am glad for you to speak unknown languages, although I had rather for you to prophesy. In fact, prophesying does much more good than speaking unknown languages, unless someone can help the church by explaining what you mean. 5 I wish you would all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you would all prophesy. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless someone gives an interpretation, so that the congregation can be edified.5 Now I desire that ye should all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy. But greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edification.
5 I would like all of you to have the gift of speaking in different languages. But what I want more is for you to prophesy. Anyone who prophesies is more important than those who can only speak in different languages. However, if they can also interpret those languages, they are as important as the one who prophesies. If they can interpret, then the church can be helped by what they say.5 I would that ye all spake strange languages, but rather that ye prophecied: for greater is hee that prophecieth, then hee that speaketh diuers tongues, except hee expounde it, that the Church may receiue edification.5 I would that you all spoke various tongues, but I would rather that you prophesied: for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks various tongues, unless he interpret; however, if he interpret it, he edifies the church.
5 I would like for all of you to speak in strange tongues; but I would rather that you had the gift of proclaiming God's message. For the person who proclaims God's message is of greater value than the one who speaks in strange tongues—unless there is someone present who can explain what is said, so that the whole church may be helped. 5 Now I want you all to speak with tongues, but even more that you may prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, in order that the church may receive edification.5 And I wish all of you to speak in languages, but rather that you may prophesy. For the one prophesying is greater than the one speaking in tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive building up. 5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 5 Now though it is my desire for you all to have the power of tongues, it would give me more pleasure to be hearing the prophet's word from you; for this is a greater thing than using tongues, if the sense is not given at the same time, for the good of the church.5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up. 5 Now I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but especially that you could prophesy. The person who prophesies is more important than the person who speaks in a tongue, unless he interprets it so that the church may be built up. 5 But I would that all of you could speak with tongues, but especially that you could prophesy. For greater is he who prophesieth than he who speaketh with tongues, unless he interpret. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened. 5 I wish all of you spoke in special sounds. But more than that, I wish all of you spoke God's Word. The one who speaks God's Word has a more important gift than the one who speaks in special sounds. But if he can tell what he is speaking, the church will be helped. 5 Now I would like all of you to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. 5 Now, don't get me wrong. I hope all of you can speak in tongues. But what I hope for more is that you can all speak God's truth. The truth is more important than tongues unless they can interpret them also. If everyone understands and benefits, then it's good.
6 So now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in other tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you with a revelation(C1) or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
6 Now brethren, if I come vnto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speake to you either by reuelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
6 Now, brothers,[a] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some (g)revelation or knowledge or prophecy or (h)teaching?
6 But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of (C1)revelation, or of (C2)knowledge, or of (C3)prophecy, or of (C4)teaching?
6 Brothers and sisters, will it help you if I come to you speaking in different languages? No! It will help you only if I bring you a new truth or some new knowledge, or prophecy, or teaching.
6 Now, believers, if I come to you speaking in unknown tongues, how will I benefit you unless I also speak to you clearly either by (C1)revelation revealing God's mystery, or by (C2)knowledge teaching about God, or by (C3)prophecy foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people, or by (C4)instruction teaching precepts that develop spiritual maturity?
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of (C1)revelation or of (C2)knowledge or of (C3)prophecy or of (C4)teaching?

6 My friends, what good would it do, if I came and spoke unknown languages to you and didn't explain what I meant? How would I help you, unless I told you what God had shown me or gave you some knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
6 Brothers, suppose I come to you now speaking in tongues. How can I be of benefit to you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
6 And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching?
