I want to learn only one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the worksthrough the works">[fn] of the law or by believing what you heard?through the hearing of faith">[fn]Acts 2:38; 8:15; 10:47; 15:8; Romans 10:16-17; Galatians 3:14; Ephesians 1:13; Hebrews 6:4;">[xr]

Are you so foolish? Having started out with the Spirit, are you now ending up with the flesh?Galatians 4:9; Hebrews 7:16; 9:10;">[xr]

Did you suffer so much for nothing? (If it really was for nothing!)Hebrews 10:35-36; 2 John 1:1:8;">[xr]

Now it is obvious that no one is justified in the sight of God by the law, because "The righteous will live by faith."Habakkuk 2:4">[fn]Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; Galatians 2:16; Hebrews 10:38;">[xr]

Why, then, was the law given?Why then the law?">[fn] It was added because of transgressions until the descendant came to whom the promise was given. It was put into effect through angels by means of an intermediary.Exodus 20:19,21-22; Deuteronomy 5:5,22-23,27, 31; John 1:17; 15:22; Acts 7:38,53, 27,31; Romans 4:15; 5:20; Galatians 1:16; 1 Timothy 1:9; 2:5; Hebrews 2:2;">[xr]

And so the law was our guardian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith.Matthew 5:17; Acts 13:39; Romans 10:4; Galatians 2:16; Colossians 2:17; Hebrews 9:9-10;">[xr]

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants and heirs according to the promise.Genesis 21:10,12; Romans 8:17; 9:7; Galatians 4:7,28, 12; Ephesians 3:6; Hebrews 11:18;">[xr]

It was the same way with us. While we were children, we were slaves to the basic principles of the world.the elemental spirits of the universe">[fn]Galatians 4:23; 4:9; 5:1; Colossians 2:8,20; Hebrews 9:10;">[xr]

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,Genesis 3:15; 49:10; Isaiah 7:14; Daniel 9:24; Micah 5:3; Matthew 1:23; 5:17; Mark 1:15; Luke 1:31; John 1:14; Romans 1:3; Ephesians 1:10; Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 2:14;">[xr]

in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as his children.Matthew 20:28; John 1:12; Galatians 3:13,26; Ephesians 1:5,7; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 1:18-19;">[xr]

But now that you know God, or rather have been known by God, how can you turn back again to those powerless and bankrupt basic principles?elemental spirits">[fn] Why do you want to become their slaves all over again?Romans 8:3; 1 Corinthians 8:3; 13:12; Galatians 3:3; Colossians 2:20; 2 Timothy 2:19; Hebrews 7:18;">[xr]

Now the son of the slave woman was conceived according to the flesh, but the son of the free woman was conceived through a promise.Genesis 18:10,14; 21:1-2; Romans 9:7-8; Hebrews 11:11;">[xr]

But the heavenly Jerusalem is the free woman, and she is our mother.the mother of us all">[fn]Isaiah 2:2; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 3:12;">[xr]

Those of you who are trying to be justified by the law have been cut off from Christ. You have fallen away from grace.Romans 9:31-32; Galatians 2:21; Hebrews 12:15;">[xr]

Brothers, if a person is caught doing something wrong, those of you who are spiritual should restore that person in a spirit of gentleness. Watch out for yourself so that you are not tempted as well.Romans 14:1; 15:1; 1 Corinthians 2:15; 3:1; 4:21; 7:5; 10:12; 2 Thessalonians 3:15; 2 Timothy 2:25; Hebrews 12:13; James 5:19;">[xr]
