1 pit, for catching lion (in figurative) Ezekiel 19:4,8; figurative ׳פעל שׁ Psalm 7:16; with עשׂה Psalm 9:16; with חפר Psalm 35:7 (trasnp. ׳שׁ to v b); with ברת Psalm 94:13; Proverbs 26:27; + Psalm 35:8b ᵑ6 We (for שׁוֺאֶה); ׳טָבַל בּשׁ Job 9:31.
2 pit of Sh®°ôl, ׳ירר שׁ Job 33:24; ׳ראה (ה)שׁ Psalm 16:10 ("" שִׁאוֺל), Psalm 49:10; ׳לשׁ, with הוֺרִיד Ezekiel 28:8, and Psalm 55:24 (׳לִבְאֵר שׁ); קָרֵב Job 33:22; יָמוּת Isaiah 51:14; ׳עָבַר בֵשּׁ Job 33:28; ׳יָרַד אֶלשֿׁ Psalm 30:10; ׳מִשּׁ, with חשׁק Isaiah 38:17 (poem), with חשׂח Job 33:18 (מִנִּיֿ); with העלה Jonah 2:7; with הֵשִׁיב Job 33:30 (מִנִּיֿ); with נאל Psalm 103:4; personified Job 17:14 ("" רִמָּה). — ׳שׁ here either = שְׁאוֺל (hollow place, cavern), or < = pit in שְׁאוֺל (compare, from Ezek. on, בּוֺר
5; also אֲבַדּוֺן, p. 2, and עִמְקֵי שְׁאוֺל Proverbs 9:18. This distinction of two parts of שְׁאוֺל became important in Jewish and Christian theology).
שַׁחַת f. with suff. שַׁחְתָּם Ezekiel 19:4, Ezekiel 19:8 (from the root שׁוּהַ, like נַהַת, from the root נוּחַ), a pit
(a) in which snares are laid for wild beasts, and metaph. used of snares, Psalms 7:16, 9:16 35:7 94:13 Proverbs 26:27 Eze. loc. cit.
(b) a cistern, in which there is mud, Job 9:31.
(c) an underground prison, Isaiah 51:14.
(d) especially the sepulchre, Psalms 30:10; Job 17:14 [?]; 33:18, 30 Job 33:30. יָרַד שַׁחַת to go down into the grave, Job 33:24 Psalm 55:24 עָבַר בַּשַּׁחַת to perish in the grave, Job 33:28. רָאָה שַׁחַת see (i.e. to experience) the sepulchre, Psalms 16:10 [see below]; 49:10.-LXX. often render שַׁחַת by διαφθορά (as if it were from שָׁחַת διαφθείρω), but not with the signification of corruption but of destruction (see the instances in Kircher and Trommius) [see below]. The Greek word has been taken in the signification of corruption by Luke [i.e. by the Holy Ghost, who inspired him], Acts 2:27, 13:35, seqq.; but it would be difficult to prove that the Hebrew word שַׁחַת should be taken in the sense of corruption, from שָׁחַת, even in a single passage [?]. Some may cite Job 17:14, where in the other hemistich there is רִמָּה, and שַׁחַת is called pater, which may seem to be only suitable to a masculine noun; but the sacred writers are not accustomed to regard the etymology or sex of nouns in such cases, comp. אִישׁוֹן בַּת עַיִן Psalms 17:8.
[Note. It is clear from the authority of the New Test. that there is a שַׁחַת m. signifying corruption, from שָׁחַת; perhaps it is only found in the cited places, Psalms 16:10, and Job 17:14.]
