Qal Imperfect 3 masculine singular + 2 masculine singular הוּא יְשׁוּפְךָראֹשׁ וְּאַתָּה תְּשׁוּפֶנּוּ עָקֵב Genesis 3:15; אֲשֶׁרבִּֿשְׂעָרָה יְשׁוּפֵנִי Job 9:17; אַךְ השֶׁךְ יְשׁוּפֵנִי Psalm 139:11 meaning unsuitable, read perhaps with Ew and others יְשׂוּבֵּנִי cover, screen, me.
שׁוֺפַךְ see שׁוֺבַךְ. שׁוּפָמִי see שְׁפוּפָם below שׁפף.
I. שׁוּק (√ of following, meaning dubious; Arabic is drive beast etc., carry on affairs; Ethiopic sustain; compare Arabic leg, especially shank, Aramaic שׁוֺקָא leg (rare), leg, thigh; connection dubious with Assyrian su‡u, street, Aramaic שׁוּקָא, , street, market-place (whence Arabic loan-word according to Frä187; but then = שׁ?), Palmyrene שוק id., Lzb373).
שׁוּף
(1) pr. (as was first seen by Umbreit on Job 9:17), i.q. שָׁאַף to gape upon [see note], hence to lie in wait for any thing, Genesis 3:15, הוּא יְשׁוּפְךָ רֹאשׁ וְאַתָּה תְּשׁוּפֶנּוּ עָקֵב “he (the seed of the woman, man) shall lie in wait for thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for his heel,” he shall endeavour to crush thy head, and thou shalt endeavour to crush his heel. Hence
(2) to attack, to fall upon any one, Job 9:17, “who falls upon me in a tempest.” Metaph. Psalms 139:11, השֶׁךְ יְשׁוּפֵנִי “darkness shall fall upon me,” shall overwhelm me.
[Note. The above explanation of Genesis 3:15, is purely neologian; the passage applies not to man generally, but to Christ the seed of the woman; bruise is the simple meaning in each part of the verse.]
