שָׁבַר fut. יִשְׁבֹּר
(1) to break, to break to pieces (Aram. and Arab. תְּבַּר, تبر id.; comp. פָּרַר), Genesis 19:9; Jeremiah 2:20, 19:10 Isaiah 42:3; Amos 1:5 used of ships broken by the wind, Ezekiel 27:26. Part. שָׁבוּר broken, i.e. having a member broken, Levit. 22:22. See several phrases under the words זְרוֹעַ, מַטֶּה, קֶשֶׁת. Pregn., Hosea 2:20, וְקֶשֶׁת וְחרֶב וּמִלְחָמָה אֶשְׁבֹּר מִן־הָאָרֶץ “and the bow, and sword, and weapons of war I will break (and cast) out of the land.” Metaph.
(a) to break (quench) thirst, Psalms 104:11.
(b) to break any one’s mind, i.e. to affect with sadness, Psalms 69:21, 147:3.
(2) to tear any one, as a wild beast, 1 Kings 13:26, 28 1 Kings 13:28.
(3) to break down, to destroy, Daniel 11:26; Ezekiel 30:21 See Niphal No. 3, and שֶׁבֶר.
(4) to measure off, to define (from the idea of cutting; compare גָּזַר). Job 38:10, וָאֶשְׁבֹּר עָלָיו חֻקִּי “when I set a boundary to it” (the sea).
(5) denom. from שֶׁבֶר No. 5.
(a) to buy corn, with the addition of שֶׁבֶר Genesis 47:14 בַּר Genesis 42:3 and absol. Genesis 42:5; Isaiah 55:1 (where it is also applied to wine and milk).
(b) to sell corn, Genesis 41:56 compare Hiphil No. 2.
Niphal, pass.
(1) to be broken, Isaiah 14:29 used of ships which are wrecked, Ezekiel 27:34; Jonah 1:4 also to break one’s limbs, Isaiah 8:15, 28:13. Metaph. of a mind broken, i.e. afflicted, sad, Psalms 34:19; Isaiah 61:1 contrite with penitence, Psalms 51:19. It once appears to be put transitively for Kal, to break any one’s mind, or heart, Ezekiel 6:9.
(2) to be torn to pieces, Psalms 124:7. Used of cattle hurt or wounded, Exodus 22:9, 13 Exodus 22:13; Ezekiel 34:4, 16 Ezekiel 34:16; Zechariah 11:16, הַנִּשְׁבָּרָה “wounded cattle.”
(3) to be broken down (as an army), Daniel 11:22; 2 Chronicles 14:12 to be destroyed, to perish (as a kingdom, a city, a people), Isaiah 8:15, 24:10 28:13 Jeremiah 48:4; Daniel 8:25, 11:4 Ezekiel 30:8.
Piel שִׁבַּר i.q. Kal, but stronger, to break altogether, thoroughly, to break in pieces, as any one’s teeth, Psalms 3:8 statues, altars, 2 Kings 18:4, 23:14 ships, Psalms 48:8.
Hiphil
(1) to cause to break through (the womb), i.e. that the child shall appear, Isaiah 66:9, הַאֲנִי אַשְׁבִּיר וְלֹא אוֹלִיד “shall I cause to break open (the womb), and not cause to bring forth?” Compare Hosea 13:13; Isaiah 37:3 and n. מַשְׁבֵּר.
(2) denom. from שֶׁבֶר to sell corn, Genesis 42:6; Amos 8:5,.
Hophal, to be broken (of the mind), Jeremiah 8:21.
