Qal Perfect 3 plural צָֽלְלוּ כַּעוֺפֶרֶת בְּמַיִם Exodus 15:10.
צָלַל to tingle, as the ear, 1 Samuel 3:11; 2 Kings 21:12. (Arab. صَلَّ, Syr. ܨܠܠ id. Compare the Germ. fchallen, Schelle, and without the sibilant הָלַל hallen, gellen; Arabic جلجل a cymbal. L being changed into n, it answers to طنّ Lat. tinnivit). It is applied to the lips quivering with fear, Habakkuk 3:16.
Derivatives, צְלָצָל, מְצִלְתַּיִם.
II.
צָלַל Arab. ضلَّ pr. to be rolled down, to roll oneself (hinabrollen), kindred to the root גָּלַל (as to which see p. 172, B ), inasmuch as the letters צ, ض come very near to the force of gutturals and palatals (see p. 598, A, and Ewald’s Gramm. p. 33). Hence צְלוּל or צְלִיל Judges 7:13, i.q. גְּלוּל or גְּלִיל = κολλύρα a round cake of bread. The verb occurs once, Exodus 15:10, צָֽלֲלוּ כָּעוֹפֶרֶת “they are rolled down like lead.” (Arab. ضَلَّ is to perish, to be hid, to disappear. IV. pass. to be buried, all from the idea of tumbling downwards).
The derived nouns take their form from the kindred צוּל, namely צוּלָה, מְצוּלָה.
III.
צָלַל (Arab. ظَلَّ), to be shaded, dusky, Nehemiah 13:19.
Hiphil, part. מֵצַל shadowing, Ezekiel 31:3.
Derivatives, צֵל, צֵלֶל, צַלְמָוֶת, מְצֻלָּה, and pr.n. צִלָּה, צְלֶלְפּוֹנִי, בְּצַלְאֵל.
