Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָפַק a root not used in Kal.

(1)  to hold, to hold fast, i.q. חָזַק, הֶחֱזִיק, see אָפִיק No. 1, and Hithpael.

(2) to be strong, mighty, see אָפִיק No. 2. For the signification of holding, especially holding firmly is often applied to strength. Arab. أَفَقَ is to overcome, to conquer; أَفِقَ to excel (prop. to be very strong) in liberality, eloquence; آفِقُ excellent, surpassing.

Hithpael, to hold oneself fast, to restrain oneself from giving way to the impulses of love, Genesis 43:31, 45:1 grief, Isaiah 42:14 anger, Esther 5:10 conscience, 1 Samuel 13:12. Genesis 45:1, “and Joseph could no longer restrain himself;” Isaiah 63:15, רַחֲמֶיךָ אֵלַי הִתְאַפָּֽקוּ “thy love towards me restrains itself;” 1 Sa. loc. cit. of Saul, “I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering” (although I knew that I was forbidden so to do).
