מְלָאכָה fem. (by a Syriacism for מַלְאָכָה), const. מְלֶאכֶת; with suff. מְלַאכְתְּךָ; plur. מַלְאָכוֹת, const. מַלְאֲכוֹת.

(1) prop. service (see the root לָאַךְ ); hence work prescribed to any one (comp. Germ. fchiken, Luth. befchicken, beforgen). Genesis 39:11; Exodus 20:9, 10 Exodus 20:10, לֹא תַעֲשֶׂח כֶל־מְלָאכָה “thou shalt do no work;” Exodus 31:14, 15 Exodus 31:15, 35:2 Leviticus 23:7. Specially of the work of an artizan; Exodus 31:3, 35:35, מְלֶאכֶת חָרָשׁ “work of a smith;” מְלֶאכֶת עוֹר Lederarbeit, something made of leather, Leviticus 13:48 מְלֶאכֶת בֵּית יְהֹוָה “the works placed in the temple of Jehovah,” 1 Chronicles 23:4; Ezra 3:8 עֹשֵׂי הַמְּלָאכָה workmen, 2 Kings 12:12 אֲשֶׁר עַל־הַמְּלָאכָה those who are set over works to be done, 1 Ki. 5:30.
