Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זָבַח (a root kindred to טָבַח Arab. ذَبَحَ, Syr. ܕܒܰܚ, Zab. ܕܒܚ and ܙܒܰܚ, Eth. ዘብሐ፡ Perhaps the same root is found in the Greek αφάσσω σφάζω, i.e. ΣΦαΓ). [fut. יִזְבַּח].

(1) to slaughter animals, Genesis 31:54; 1 Samuel 28:24; 1 Kings 19:21; Ezekiel 39:17.

(2) specially to slay in sacrifice, to sacrifice, to immolate, 1 Samuel 1:4 followed by לְ (1 Kings 8:63), and לִפְנֵי (ibid. verse 62 1 Kings 8:62; 2 Chronicles 7:4; Leviticus 9:4), before the name of him to whom the sacrifice is offered. It is not used of priests slaying victims, but of private persons who brought sacrifices at their own charge.

Piel זִבַּח fur יְזַבֵּחַ to sacrifice, i.q. Kal No. 2, 1 Kings 12:32; 2 Kings 12:4. It is frequently used iteratively of the custom of sacrificing (like the Arab. ذَبَّحَ to sacrifice much or frequently), 1 Kings 3:2, 1 Kings 3:3, 11:8 Hosea 4:14, etc.
