Brown-Driver-Briggs Expanded Definition
 I. בֹּר noun masculine lye, potash, alkali used in smelting metals Isaiah 1:25 ** read probably כַּכֻּר as in a furnace ( Isaiah 48:10); there seems no evidence that 'lye' (i.e. water mixed with the burnt ashes of plants containing potash, used formerly for washing) was ever used in refining gold or silver: compare J. Napier Anc. Workers in Metal {1856}, 15,20, 25 WAM in Smith DB ii. 368; Amer. Rev. Ed. (1871, vol, iii), 1939. (see בֹּרִית).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בֹּר m. [Root בָּרַר].

(1)  purity. Commonly with the addition of יָדַיִם Psalms 18:21, 25 Psalms 18:25, or כַּפַּיִם Job 9:30, 22:30, cleanness of hands, being put figuratively for innocency. Once בֹּר simply is used in the same sense, 2 Samuel 22:25.

(2) that which has a cleansing property: lixivium, alkali, i.q. בֹּרִית which see; Job 9:30. Alkali was used by the ancients for washing, when mixed with oil instead of soap, and also in smelting metals that they might melt the more quickly, Isaiah 1:25.
