ὑπεναντί-ος, α, ον Arist. Pol. 1327a17, Plu. Ages. 24; but ος, ον Pl. Alc. 2.139b: — set over against, meeting, ἵπποι ὑ. ἀλλήλοισιν Hes. Sc. 347.

a. opposite to; set over against: ἵπποι ὑπεναντίοι ἀλληλοι, meeting one another, Hesiod scut. 347.
b. tropically (Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch, others), opposed to, contrary to: τινα, Colossians 2:14 (where see Lightfoot); ὁ ὑπεναντίος as a substantive (Xenophon, Polybius, Plutarch), an adversary, Hebrews 10:27, cf. the Sept. Isaiah 26:11 (the Sept. for אויֵב, צָר); often in the O. T. Apocrypha.

";ravine"; (Luk. 3:5 LXX). Preisigke ( Wort. s.v.) identifies this word with the φάλαγξ of BGU I. 282.18 (after A.D. 175) according to the better reading φάλαγξ for Φάλαγξ (see ib. p. 358) : cf. l..27. The verb φαραγγόω is found in P Tebt I. 151 (a survey-list—late ii/B.C.) wilh reference to land ploughed up in furrows—ἀρούρης πεφαραγγωμένης.
