 חֵמָר noun [masculine] bitumen, asphalt (from I. חמר according to OBlau ZMG 1869,279, bitumen as seething, swelling up; Thes MV, from IV. חמר, with reference to reddish-brown colour) — חֵמָר Genesis 11:3 2t.; used for cement in building Babel Genesis 11:3 (J); abounding in vale of Siddim ׳בֶּאֱרֹת בֶּאֱרֹת ח Genesis 14:10; used in coating Moses' 'ark' of bulrushes Exodus 2:3 (E; "" זָ֑פֶת).

חֵמָר m. ἄσφαλτος, bitumen, which boils up from subterranean fountains like oil or hot pitch, in the vicinity of Babylon, and also near the Dead Sea, and from its bottom; it afterwards hardens through the heat of the sun, and is collected on the surface of the Dead Sea, which hence receives the name of lacus asphaltites. (Tac. Hist. 5, 6. Strabo, xvi. page 763. Diod., ii. 48; xix. 98, 99. Curt., v. 16; see also the accounts of modern travellers collected by Rosenmüller, altes und neues Morgenland, i. No. 24, 31.) Genesis 11:3, 14:10 Exodus 2:3. Arab. حُمَرُ. It receives its name either from its boiling up from the fountains (see Genesis 14:14), from the root No. 1, or from redness, the best kind being of that colour; Diosc. i. 99, ἄσφαλτος διαφέρει ἡ ἰουδαϊκὴ τῆς λοιπῆς· ἔστι δὲ καλὴ ἡ πορφυροειδῶς στίλβουσα … … Γεννᾶται καὶ ἐν Φοινίκῃ καὶ ἐν Σιδόνι καὶ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι καὶ ἐν Ζακύνφῳ.
