1. presence: 1 Corinthians 16:17; 2 Corinthians 10:10; opposed to ἀπουσίᾳ, Philippians 2:12 (2 Macc. 15:21; (Aristotle, phys. 2, 3, p. 195a, 14; metaphys. 4, 2, p. 1013b, 14; meteor. 4, 5, p. 382a, 33 etc.)).

2. the presence of one coming, hence, the coming, arrival, advent, ((Polybius 3, 41, 1. 8); Judith 10:18; 2 Macc. 8:12; (Hermas, sim. 5, 5, 3 [ET])): 2 Corinthians 7:6; 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (cf. ἀποκαλυφθήσεται; ... πάλιν πρός τινα, of a return, Philippians 1:26. In the N. 1. usually in cl., a being present, presence: 1 Corinthians 16:17, 2 Corinthians 10:10; opp. to ἀπουσία , Philippians 2:12 (cf. 2 Maccabees 15:21).

2. a coming, arrival, advent (Soph., Eur., Thuc., al., v. LS, s.v.; so Jth, l.c., 2 Maccabees 8:12) : 2 Corinthians 7:6-7, Philippians 1:26, 2 Thessalonians 2:9; in late writers (v. M, Th., 145 ff.; MM, xix; LAE, 372 ff.) as technical term for the visit of a king; hence, in NT, specif. of the Advent or Parousia of Christ : Matthew 24:3; Matthew 24:27; Matthew 24:37; Matthew 24:39, 1 Corinthians 15:23, 1 Thessalonians 2:19; 1 Thessalonians 3:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; 1 Thessalonians 5:23, 2 Thessalonians 2:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:8, James 5:7-8, 2 Peter 1:16; 2 Peter 3:4; 2 Peter 3:12, 1 John 2:28.†

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

περισσεύω, with the meaning ";remain over,"; as often in the NT (Matthew 15:37, al.), occurs in Syll 306 (= .3672).19 (B.C. 162–0) εἰ δέ τι περισσεύοι ἀπὸ τῶν τόκων, and ib. .3250ii. 33 (B. C 338–7) τῶν ] σκευῶν τῶμ περισσευσάντω [ν σταδίου. The common Pauline sense ";have abundance"; survives in MGr περισσεύω.
