Qal Imperfect 3 masculine plural שָׁמָיו יַעַרְפוּטָֿ֑ל Deuteronomy 33:28 his heavens drop dew; figurative, of speech, intransitive, יַעֲרֹף כַּמָּטָרלִקְחִי Deuteronomy 32:2 let my teaching drop like the rain ("" תִּזַּל כַּטַּל אִמְרָתִי). — compare רָעַף.
עָרַף i.q. רָעַף to drop down (tropfen, to drop; compare דָּלַף, זָלַף, the last syllable of which is identical), Deuteronomy 33:28 metaph. used of speech, Deuteronomy 32:2.
Derivative, עֲרִיפִים.
II.
עָרַף
(1) originally, as I suppose, to pluck, to seize, to pull; Germ. raufen, a sense which is found in the primary syllable רף, רב, compare רָפָא, רִיב, and, with a palatal or guttural letter added at the beginning, גָּרַף, חָרַף, עָרַף. Hence عُرْفُ the mane of a horse (so called from its being pulled), غَرَفَ to pull out the forelock of a horse, and Hebr. עֹרֶף neck, prob. so called from mane. (In the Indo-Germanic languages with this agree, rapio, carpo, raffen, raufen. The signification of mane and top are found in the Gr. λόφος, mane; hence, neck, back, κορυφή, κόρυμβος, κορύμβη, top.)
(2) denom. from עֹרֶף to break the neck of an animal, Exodus 13:13, 34:20 Deuteronomy 21:4, Deuteronomy 21:6; Isaiah 66:3. Figuratively, to overthrow, to destroy altars, Hosea 10:2.
